Additionally, the unique physicochemical properties of single atom sites endow SACs with superior activity in various catalytic processes for environmental remediation (ER). Generally, SACs are burgeoning and promising materials in the application of ER. However, a systematic and critical review on the mechanism and broad application of SACs-based ER is lacking. Herein, we review emerging studies applying SACs for different ERs, such as eliminating organic pollutants in water, removing volatile organic compounds, purifying automobile exhaust, and others (hydrodefluorination and disinfection). We have summarized the synthesis, characterization, reaction mechanism and structural-function relationship of SACs in ER. In addition, the perspectives and challenges of SACs for ER are also analyzed. We expect that this review can provide constructive inspiration for discoveries and applications of SACs in environmental catalysis in the future.Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been widely detected in various environmental matrices worldwide and raised public concerns in recent years. However, few studies reported their occurrence and temporal trend in Antarctic air. In this study, concentrations, distribution, and temporal trends of NBFRs and OPEs in the air of Fildes Peninsula, West Antarctica, were investigated using XAD resin-based passive air sampling from January 2011 to January 2020. Decabromodiphenyl ethane and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate were the most abundant NBFR and OPE congeners, respectively. Significant positive correlations were observed among hexabromobenzene, pentabromoethylbenzene, and pentabromotoluene, indicating that their occurrence in Antarctic air may be affected by similar sources. No spatial differences in any of the NBFR and OPE congeners were observed, implying minor impact from local scientific research stations. Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the temporal trends of NBFRs and OPEs in Antarctic air, with decreasing trends observed for Σ6NBFRs and Σ7OPEs. This is one of the rare studies providing a comprehensive investigation of the temporal trends in NBFRs and OPEs in Antarctic air and highlights concern regarding the contamination of these chemicals in remote polar regions.In this study, the influence of the plastisphere on metals accumulation and weathering processes of polystyrene (PSMPs) and nylon microplastics (NyMPs) in polluted waters during a 129 day-assay were studied. MPs were characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transformed infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, contact angle, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Also Cr, Mn, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu in the plastisphere on MPs were analyzed during the assay. Potentially pathogenic Vibrio, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas spp. were abundant in both MPs. Ascomycota fungi (Phona s.l., Alternaria sp., Penicillium sp., and Cladosporium sp.), and yeast, were also identified. NyMPs and PSMPs exhibited a decrease in the contact angle and increased their weights. SEM/EDX showed weathering signs, like surface cracks and pits, and leaching TiO2 pigments from NyMPs after 42 days. XRD displayed a notorious decrease in NyMPs crystallinity, which could alter its interaction with external contaminants. Heavy metal accumulation on the plastisphere formed on each type of MPs increased over the exposure time. After 129 days of immersion, metals concentrations in the plastisphere on MPs were in the following order Cr ˃ Mn ˃ Zn ˃ Cu ˃ Pb ˃ Cd, demonstrating how the biofilm facilitates metal mobilization. The results of this study lead to a better understanding of the impact of marine plastic debris as vectors of pathogens and heavy metals in coastal environments.In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) porous calcium alginate (3D CA) scaffold was successfully constructed using a direct-ink-writing-based 3D printing method combined with an in-situ calcium ion cross-linking procedure. The 3D CA contained orderly aligned microstructures with excellent structural robustness and an abundant number of active binding sites. The adsorption experiments verified that 3D CA had a considerably wide pH value (3-10) serving range, but also delivered a significantly higher adsorption capacity for U(VI) (117.3 mg/g at pH = 2.5) under acidic conditions, compared to other previously reported alginate-based porous adsorbents. The adsorption mechanisms originated from the synergistic effect of electrostatic interactions and ion exchange. The 3D CA eluted the adsorbed U(VI) in a strong acid solution through protonation mechanism, facilitating the continued enrichment and recycling of U(VI). In addition, the 3D CA demonstrated good microstructure stability and absorption capacity stability when it was immersed in hydrochloric acid solutions at different concentrations (3.6 × 10-3 to 2 mol/L) for 24 h. Therefore, the 3D CA could be used for the removal and recycling of U(VI) from acidic solutions beyond its wide pH working range, due to its stronger acid stability and higher U(VI) adsorption capacity.Photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) in aqueous solutions has been considered as an efficient and promising technology to solve radioactive U pollution. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were firstly employed to optimize and compare the adsorption configurations combined uranium with four given photocatalysts, then their adsorption energies were - 0.97 eV for AgFeO2, - 1.15 eV for Zn doped AgFeO2, - 1.73 eV for Cu doped AgFeO2 and - 2.66 eV for S doped AgFeO2, respectively, indicating the sulfur doping plays a major role in U(VI) photoreduction. Herein, a visible light responsive efficient sulfur doped AgFeO2 photocatalyst (S doped AgFeO2) was synthesized and utilized to photocatalytic reduction of U(VI) in aqueous solutions. According to XRD, XPS and TEM analysis, the sulfur was successfully doped in AgFeO2 via the hydrothermal method. The batch experimental showed that S doping enhanced the U(VI) photoreduction activity of AgFeO2, and the S-AFO-3 photocatalyst exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity (92.57%), which was 1.5 times than that of pure AgFeO2. ESR, PL and DFT results demonstrated that the enhancement of adsorbed U(VI) photoreduction was attributed to the own unique effect of oxygen vacancy defects and efficient charge separation of S doped AgFeO2 photocatalyst. Due to its higher adsorption energies, fast-U(VI) photoreduction rate and superior chemical stability, the sulfur doped AgFeO2 photocatalyst is hoped for water remediation containing U(VI) wastewater.During time-periods oil slicks are in the marine environment (age-at-sea), weathering causes significant changes in composition and mass loss (depletion) of oil spill chemicals including the more toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The goal of this study was to estimate the age-at-sea of weathered oil slicks using the oil spill module of the Connectivity Modeling System and to use this age to interpret PAH concentration measurements. Percent depletion (PD) for each measurement was computed as the percentage difference between the original and measured PAH concentration in the crude oil and weathered oil slicks, normalized upon the mass losses relative to hopane. Mean PD increased with estimated age-at-sea for all PAHs. Less PD was observed for alkylated than for parent PAHs, likely due to decreasing vapor pressure with increasing degree of alkylation. We conclude that estimated age-at-sea can be used to explain PAH depletion in weathered oil slicks. We propose PAH vapor pressure can be coupled with the model to expand capacity for predicting concentration distributions of individual parent and alkylated PAHs in weathered oil along the coastline. This new module will advance the science supporting oil spill response by providing more certain estimates of health risks from oil spills.Currently, most advanced oxidation denitrification technologies require long flue gas residence time to obtain ideal NO removal efficiency. The NaOH-catalyzed H2O2 system proposed in this paper can obtain 98% NO removal efficiency under the condition of flue gas residence time of 3 s. The mechanism of NO removal and H2O2 decomposition to O2 were proposed. It was confirmed with ESR (Electron-spin-resonance), inhibitor experiments and UV-Vis spectrophotometer that the main group in the reaction process was·O2- radicals, which reacted with NO to form ONOO-, and ONOO- would be gradually transformed into NO3- and NO2- in the air. The effect of some primary factors on the NO removal efficiency and the percentage of H2O2 decomposition to O2 were also investigated. The increase of initial pH has a positive effect on NO removal, while the promotion of NO removal by increasing H2O2 concentration and reaction temperature is limited and the increase of NO has a negative effect on NO removal. Initial pH has a dual impact on the percentage of H2O2 decomposition to O2, H2O2 concentration and reaction temperature promote the decomposition of H2O2 to O2, while NO concentration has an inhibiting effect on it.Uranium is an important fuel for nuclear power, with 4.5 billion tons of it stored in the oceans, 1,000 times more than on land. Polymer membrane materials are widely used in the marine resources fields, due to their convenient collection, good separation and can work continuously. Herein, a poly(amidoxime)-polyacrylonitrile blend membrane (PCP) with high flux, excellent antibacterial properties and uranium adsorption performance has been prepared by using the phase inversion method, and the prepared membrane was used for highly efficient uranium extraction from seawater. In static adsorption experiments, the PCP membrane reached adsorption equilibrium after 48 h, and the adsorption capacity was 303.89 mg/g (C0 =50 mg/L). In dynamic adsorption experiments, it was found that the lower flow rate and higher number of membrane layers were favorable for dynamic adsorption. In addition, the water flux of the PCP membrane was 7.4 times higher than that of the PAN membrane. The adsorption mechanism can be attributed to the chelation between amino and hydroxyl groups in CS, amidoxime group in poly(amidoxime) and uranyl ions. The simple preparation process coupled with the excellent adsorption performance indicated that the PCP membrane would be a promising material for the uranium extraction from seawater.
