Associations between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and brain morphology have been reported, although with several inconsistencies. These may partly stem from confounding bias, which could distort associations and limit generalizability. We examined how associations between brain morphology and ADHD symptoms change with adjustments for potential confounders typically overlooked in the literature (aim 1), and for the intelligence quotient (IQ) and head motion, which are generally corrected for but play ambiguous roles (aim 2).<br />Participants were 10-year-old children from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (<br />= 7722) and Generation R (<br />= 2531) Studies. Cortical area, volume, and thickness were measured with MRI and ADHD symptoms with the Child Behavior Checklist. Surface-based cross-sectional analyses were run.<br />ADHD symptoms related to widespread cortical regions when solely adjusting for demographic factors. Additional adjustments for socioeconomic and maternal behavioral confounders (aim 1) generally attenuated associations, as cluster sizes halved and effect sizes substantially reduced. Cluster sizes further changed when including IQ and head motion (aim 2), however, we argue that adjustments might have introduced bias.<br />Careful confounder selection and control can help identify more robust and specific regions of associations for ADHD symptoms, across two cohorts. This preliminary retrospective study included 19 patients with GBC who underwent contrast-enhanced CT within 4 weeks before surgical resection. The GBC showed PNI on pathologic assessment in 8/19 patients. On CT, wall-thickening morphology had sensitivity of 75.0% and specificity of 81.8% for PNI; soft tissue stranding around the celiac plexus had sensitivity of 62.5% and specificity of 100.0% for PNI.Gene transfer agents (GTAs) are phage-like particles that transfer pieces of cellular genomic DNA to other cells. Homologues of the Rhodobacter capsulatus GTA (RcGTA) structural genes are widely distributed in the Alphaproteobacteria and particularly well conserved in the order Rhodobacterales. Possible reasons for their widespread conservation are still being discussed. It has been suggested that these alphaproteobacterial elements originate from a prophage that was present in an ancestral bacterium and subsequently evolved into a GTA that is now widely maintained in extant descendant lineages. Here, we analysed genomic properties that might relate to the conservation of these alphaproteobacterial GTAs. This revealed that the chromosomal locations of the GTA gene clusters are biased. They primarily occur on the leading strand of DNA replication, at large distances from long repetitive elements, and thus are in regions of lower plasticity, and in areas of extreme GC skew, which also accumulate core genes. These extreme GC skew regions arise from the preferential use of codons with an excess of G over C, a distinct phenomenon from the elevated GC content that has previously been found to be associated with GTA genes. The observed properties, along with their high level of conservation, show that GTA genes share multiple features with core genes in the examined lineages of the Alphaproteobacteria.Cells convert electrical signals into chemical outputs to facilitate the active transport of information across larger distances. Alterations of ion channel expression provide landmarks of numerous pathological diseases, such as cardiac arrhythmia, epilepsy, or cancer. Although the activity of ion channels can be locally regulated by external light or chemical stimulus, it remains challenging to coordinate the expression of ion channels on extended spatial-temporal scales. Here, we engineered yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to read and convert chemical concentrations into a dynamic potassium channel expression. A synthetic dual-feedback circuit controls the expression of engineered potassium channels through phytohormones auxin and salicylate to produce a macroscopically coordinated pulses of the plasma membrane potential. Our study provides a compact experimental model to control electrical activity through gene expression in eukaryotic cell populations setting grounds for various cellular engineering, synthetic biology, and potential therapeutic applications.Adhesive hydrogels based on chemically modified photocrosslinkable polymers with specific physicochemical properties are frequently utilized for sealing wounds or incisions. These adhesive hydrogels offer tunable characteristics such as tailorable tissue adhesion, mechanical properties, swelling ratios, and enzymatic degradability. In this study, we developed and optimized a photocrosslinkable adhesive patch, GelPatch, with high burst pressure, minimal swelling, and specific mechanical properties for application as an ocular (sclera and subconjunctival) tissue adhesive. To achieve this, we formulated a series of hydrogel patches composed of different polymers with various levels of methacrylation, molecular weights, and hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties. A computerized multifactorial definitive screening design (DSD) analysis was performed to identify the most prominent components impacting critical response parameters such as adhesion, swelling ratio, elastic modulus, and second order interactions between applied components. These parameters were mathematically processed to generate a predictive model that identifies the linear and non-linear correlations between these factors. In conclusion, an optimized formulation of GelPatch was selected based on two modified polymers gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and glycidyl methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HAGM). Here, we demonstrate the stabilizer-free electrochemical synthesis of AuNPs inside nanoliter-sized reactors. Droplets encapsulating a gold precursor are formed on a microfluidic device and exposed to an electrical current by guiding them through a pair of electrodes. We exploit the naturally occurring recirculation flows inside confined droplets (moving in rectangular microchannels) to prevent the aggregation of nanoparticles after nucleation. Therefore, AuNPs with sizes in the range of 30 to 100 nm were produced without the need of additional capping agents. The average particle size is defined by the precursor concentration and droplet velocity, while the charge dose given by the electric field strength has a minor effect. Accordingly, these peroxides serving as "masked" enals have also been utilized to prepare the previously hard-to-achieve α-enal-tethered ketones in one step.<br />The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the oncologic outcomes of two popular systemic chemotherapy approaches in patients with colorectal peritoneal metastases(CPM) undergoing cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC).<br />We performed a dual-center retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent CRS-HIPEC for CPM due to high or intermediate-grade colorectal cancer. Patients in the total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) group received 6 months of preoperative chemotherapy. Patients in the "sandwich" (SAND) chemotherapy group received 3 months of preoperative chemotherapy with a maximum of 3 months of postoperative chemotherapy.<br />A total of 34 (43%) patients were included in the TNT group and 45 (57%) patients in the SAND group. The median overall survival (OS) in the TNT and SAND groups were 77 and 61 months, respectively (p = 0.8). Patients in the TNT group had significantly longer recurrence-free survival(RFS) than the SAND group (29 vs. 12 months, p = 0.02).
