During gametogenesis, genome stability is essential for inheritance and formation of healthy gametes. The latter involves DNA double-strand break (DSB)-driven pairing of homologous chromosomes in first meiotic prophase. By analysis of DSB repair kinetics in male meiotic prophase cells of homologous recombination (HR) and nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ)-deficient mouse models, we previously demonstrated an interplay between HR and the conventional NHEJ repair pathway. In the current work, we evaluate the relative contribution of Parp1-dependent NHEJ to the repair of ectopic ionizing radiation (IR)-induced DSBs in control and Parp1-inhibited mouse pachytene spermatocytes before and after the completion of meiotic recombination in stages VI-XI. Thus, it appears that Parp1 contributes to the repair of a fraction of DSBs in late prophase I, providing further insights in DNA repair pathway choreography during spermatogenic differentiation.Background Much end-of-life care is provided in hospital, yet little is known about the delivery of palliative care during end-of-life hospitalizations. Objectives To characterize the level of palliative care involvement across hospitalizations in the last year of life. Methods A population-based retrospective cohort study of adults in Ontario, Canada, who died between April 1, 2012, and March 31, 2017, and had at least one acute care hospitalization in their last year of life. Using linked administrative health data, we developed a hierarchy of inpatient palliative care involvement reflecting the degree to which care was delivered with palliative intent. This hierarchy was based on palliative care diagnosis and service provider codes on hospitalization records and physician claims. We examined variations in the level of palliative care involvement across key patient characteristics. Results In the last year of life, 65.1% of hospitalizations had no indication of palliative care involvement, 16.7% had a low level of involvement, 13.5% had a medium level of involvement, and 4.7% had a high level of involvement. Most hospitalizations with palliative care involvement (85.6%) occurred in the two months before death. Compared to patients who received no inpatient palliative care, patients who received a high level of palliative care involvement tended to be younger, died of cancer, resided in urban or lower income neighborhoods, and had fewer chronic conditions. Discussion While many hospitalizations occurred in the last year of life, the majority did not involve palliative care, and very few had a high level of palliative care involvement.This study's aim was to uncover psychological and social motives for using untact services and to explore the relationships between identified motivations and attitudinal and continuous behavioral intention variables. We conducted a survey with 328 untact service users, and used exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to find underlying motivations. The findings suggest that users of untact services have four primary motives. Individuals use untact services to protect their personal information (privacy), to increase their control over business transactions (control), to enjoy the process itself (fun), and to avoid uncomfortable interactions with employees (interaction avoidance). In addition, identified motivations and attitudes toward as well as continuing intention to use the services were all positively related. Among the motivations, control showed the strongest relationship with both attitude and continuance intention.A host of studies have examined the impact of playing violent video games on aggressive behavior. However, longitudinal research is rare, and existing studies have allowed little room for individual variability in the trajectories of violent video game play. The current study used a person-centered approach to examine trajectories, predictors, and outcomes of violent video game play over a 10-year period. Three groups of individuals emerged high initial violence (4 percent), moderate (23 percent), and low increasers (73 percent). High initial violence and moderate groups showed a curvilinear pattern of violent video game play across time, whereas low increasers group increased slightly in violent video game play across time. The high initial violence and moderate groups were more likely to be male, and those in the high initial violence group were more likely to be depressed at the initial wave. There was no difference in prosocial behavior at the final time point across all the three groups, but individuals in the moderate group displayed the highest levels of aggressive behavior at the final wave. Implications of the results are discussed.<br />It is uncertain if disparities in asthma diagnosis between Latino and non-Hispanic white children stem from differences in diagnosis over time among children presenting with similar clinical scenarios suggestive of asthma.<br />We evaluated the odds of International Classification of Disease (ICD)-coded asthma diagnosis in Latino (English and Spanish preferring) and non-Hispanic white children, overall (<br /> = 524,456) and among those presenting with possible asthma indicators (<br /> = 85,516) over a 13-year period, using electronic health record data from a multi-state network of community health centers.<br />Among those with possible asthma indicators, Spanish-preferring Latinos had lower adjusted odds of ICD-coded asthma diagnosis compared to non-Hispanic whites (OR = 0.87, 95%CI = 0.77-0.99); English-preferring Latinos did not differ from non-Hispanic whites. Differences in ICD-coded diagnosis between ethnicity/language groups varied by presenting symptom.<br />Spanish-preferring Latino children may be less-likely to have ICD-coded asthma documented in the EHR when presenting with certain clinical indicators suggestive of asthma.
