To explore nursing and midwifery managers' views regarding obstacles to compassion-giving across country cultures.
The benefit of compassionate leadership is being advocated, but despite the fact that health care is invariably conducted within culturally diverse workplaces, the interconnection of culture, compassion and leadership is rarely addressed. Furthermore, evidence on how cultural factors hinder the expression of compassion among nursing and midwifery managers is lacking.
Cross-sectional, exploratory, international online survey involving 1 217 participants from 17 countries. Managers' responses on open-ended questions related to barriers for providing compassion were entered and thematically analysed through NVivo.
Three key themes related to compassion-giving obstacles emerged across countries 1. related to the managers' personal characteristics and experiences; 2. system-related; and 3. staff-related.
Obstacles to compassion-giving among managers vary across countries. An understanding of and guidelines for compassionate leadership, in the face of distorted organizational cultures and system-related obstacles to compassion-giving.
To describe the trajectory of clinical signs in children who developed human immunodeficiency virus encephalopathy (HIVE) after starting early antiretroviral therapy (ART).
This was a retrospective case-cohort description of HIVE among Cape Town participants from the Children with HIV Early AntiRetroviral treatment (CHER) trial. Criteria for HIVE diagnosis were at least two of (1) acquired central motor deficit, (2) impaired brain growth, and (3) failure to attain or loss of developmental milestones in the absence of an alternative aetiology.
Of 133 surviving participants who initiated ART at a median age of 9weeks and who were followed until a median age of 6years, 20 (12%) developed HIVE at a median age 31months (interquartile range 19-37). In these, the first neurological deterioration was noticed at a median age of 19months, when 16 were on ART and nine had undetectable HIV viral load for a median of 12months. Signs of upper motor neurons were present in 18, of whom 12 resolved and four had persistent spastic diplegia; 19 had motor delay, of whom 14 resolved; 12 had language delay, of whom 11 resolved; and 16 had impaired brain growth, of whom only five recovered. For the 16 participants already on ART at HIVE diagnosis, regimens were not altered in response to diagnosis.
HIVE may occur despite early ART initiation and virological suppression and then resolve on unchanged ART, most likely as intrathecal inflammation subsides.

It has been reported that lncRNA HNF1 homeobox A antisense RNA 1 (HNF1A-AS1) was abnormally expressed and played a role in the initiation and development of various human cancers. In this study, we confirmed that the expression level of HNF1A-AS1 was increased in glioma tissues and cells. Knockdown of HNF1A-AS1 inhibited cell proliferation and promoted cell apoptosis in glioma. Then, we disclosed the downregulation of miR-363-3p in glioma tissues and cell lines. The interaction between HNF1A-AS1 and miR-363-3p was identified in glioma cells. Furthermore, an inverse correlation between HNF1A-AS1 and miR-363-3p was observed in glioma tissues. Afterwards, we recognized that MAP2K4 was a direct target of miR-363-3p. The expression of MAP2K4 was negatively correlated with miR-363-3p while positively related to HNF1A-AS1 in glioma tissues. We also found the regulatory effect of HNF1A-AS1 on the MAP2K4-dependent JNK signaling pathway. All findings indicated that HNF1A-AS1 induces the upregulation of MAP2K4 to activate the JNK signaling pathway to promote glioma cell growth by acting as a miR-363-3p sponge.
Since its emergence in December 2019, COVID-19 has spread to over 210 countries, with an estimated mortality rate of 3-4%. Little is understood about its effects during pregnancy.
To describe the current understanding of COVID-19 illness in pregnant women, to describe obstetric outcomes and to identify gaps in the existing knowledge.
Medline Ovid, EMBASE, World Health Organization COVID-19 research database and Cochrane COVID-19 in pregnancy spreadsheet were accessed on 18/4, 18/5 and 23/5 2020. Articles were screened via Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The following were excluded reviews, opinion pieces, guidelines, articles pertaining solely to other viruses, single case reports.
Sixty articles were included in this review. Some pregnant participants may have been included in multiple publications, as admission dates overlap for reports from the same hospital. However, a total of 1287 confirmed SARS-CoV-2 positive pregnant cases are reported. Where univ pregnancy was often asymptomatic. A qualitative descriptive design, as explained by Sandelowski, was used to explore academic incivility as perceived by nurse educator leaders. Twenty semi-structured interviews were conducted with nurse educator leaders, representing three levels of management in Botswana.
