We have been made aware that the Figure 2 of the title paper [...].Hydrogels composed of calcium cross-linked alginate are under investigation as bioinks for tissue engineering scaffolds due to their variable viscoelasticity, biocompatibility, and erodibility. Here, pyrrole was oxidatively polymerized in the presence of sodium alginate solutions to form ionomeric composites of various compositions. The IR spectroscopy shows that mild base is required to prevent the oxidant from attacking the alginate during the polymerization reaction. The resulting composites were isolated as dried thin films or cross-linked hydrogels and aerogels. The products were characterized by elemental analysis to determine polypyrrole incorporation, electrical conductivity measurements, and by SEM to determine changes in morphology or large-scale phase separation. Polypyrrole incorporation of up to twice the alginate (monomer versus monomer) provided materials amenable to 3D extrusion printing. The PC12 neuronal cells adhered and proliferated on the composites, demonstrating their biocompatibility and potential for tissue engineering applications.Keloids, benign cutaneous overgrowths of dermal fibroblasts, are caused by pathologic scarring of wounds during healing. Current surgical and therapeutic modalities are unsatisfactory. Although adiponectin has shown an antifibrotic effect, its large size and insolubility limit its potential use in keloid treatment. We investigated the effect of a smaller and more stable adiponectin-based peptide (ADP355) on transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1)-induced fibrosis in a primary culture of keloid fibroblasts prepared from clinically obtained keloid samples. Xenograft of keloid tissues on athymic nude mice was used to investigate the effect of intralesional injection of ADP355. ADP355 significantly attenuated the TGF-β1-induced expression of procollagen type 1 in keloid fibroblasts (p less then 0.05). Moreover, it inhibited the TGF-β1-induced phosphorylation of SMAD3 and ERK, while amplifying the phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (p less then 0.05). Knockdown of adiponectin receptor 1 reversed the attenuation of procollagen expression in ADP355-treated TGF-β1-induced fibrosis (p less then 0.05). ADP355 also significantly reduced the gross weight and procollagen expression of keloid tissues in xenograft mice compared to control animals. These results demonstrate the therapeutic potential of the adiponectin peptide ADP355 for keloids.Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss among the elderly population. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is essential for choroidal neovascularization (CNV) development in advanced, wet AMD. Chrysin (5,7-dihydroxyflavone) is a natural flavonoid with anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-angiogenic effects. We hypothesized that intravitreally injected chrysin may inhibit CNV due to its inhibitory effect on angiogenesis. To determine the effects of chrysin on an experimental CNV model, we induced CNV in Brown Norway rats with a diode laser. One week later, rats were injected intravitreally with chrysin in the right eye and vehicle in the left eye. The following week, we evaluated chrysin's effects via the CNV grade assessed with fluorescein angiography and histologic analyses. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) and VEGF expression in the retina/choroid complex were also measured in both eyes. The mean CNV grade was significantly lower in chrysin-treated vs. control eyes (2.34 ± 1.14 vs. 2.97 ± 1.05, p less then 0.001), as was the mean CNV thickness (33.90 ± 4.89 vs. 38.50 ± 5.43 μm, p less then 0.001) and mean HIF-1α and VEGF levels (both p less then 0.001). Compared to chrysin-treated eyes, the relative risk of control eyes developing high-leakage lesions was 2.03 (95% confidence interval 1.46-2.83). Since chrysin inhibited laser-induced CNV and downregulated HIF-1α and VEGF expression, it is a candidate for treating wet AMD and other CNV-associated conditions.A thorough characterization of the early time sub-100 fs relaxation dynamics of biologically relevant chromophores is of crucial importance for a complete understanding of the mechanisms regulating the ultrafast dynamics of the relaxation processes in more complex multichromophoric light-harvesting systems. There is little information about the characteristics and outcomes related to medical marijuana use. This study is a descriptive analysis of older adults (aged ≥50 years old) who were early adopters of a medical marijuana program in the U.S. state of Florida. Per state legislation, initial and follow-up treatment plans were submitted to the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. Data collection included demographics, clinical history, medical conditions, substance use history, prescription history, and health status. Follow-up treatment plans noted changes in the chief complaint and actions taken since the initial visit. Of the state's 7548 registered users between August 2016 and July 2017, N = 4447 (58.9%) were older adults. Patients utilized cannabidiol (CBD)-only preparations (45%), preparations that had both tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD (33.3%) or were recorded to use both CBD-only and THC + CBD products (21.7%). The chief complaints indicating medical cannabis treatment were musculoskeletal disorders and spasms (48.4%) and chronic pain (45.4%). Among other prescription medications, patients utilized antidepressants (23.8%), anxiolytics and benzodiazepines (23.5%), opioids (28.6%), and cardiovascular agents (27.9%).
