These cases expand limited knowledge regarding neuropsychological functioning of children with SCN8A-related epilepsy with unique de-novo pathogenic variants. While SCN8A-DEE is clearly associated with ID, other pathogenic variants may show better preserved intellect, despite other neuropsychological and behavioral concerns.Purpose This study aimed to examine the activities of heart rate variability (HRV) and cortisol secretion as markers of the autonomous nervous system (ANS) and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) during the menstrual cycle in female athletes. Method Saliva samples of the participants (n = 28) were collected successively at 0, 15, 30, and 60 min after awakening to assess cortisol awakening response (CAR) during each of four phases of the menstrual cycle (the menstruation, ovulation, luteal, and premenstrual phases). Diurnal saliva samples were collected at noon, in the evening (1700) and 2200 for cortisol analysis. HRV was measured in the menstrual and premenstrual phases at rest (1200-1400). Results There was no difference between CAR parameters in the menstrual phases. CAR parameters and diurnal cortisol levels were significantly correlated with each other throughout the menstrual cycle. Mean cortisol was a strong predictor of the area under the curve (AUC S = 0.042; R-Sq = 98.4%). Time-dependent parameters of HRV (standard deviation of the N-N interval [SDNN; P = .049] and the root mean square of the successive R-R differences [rMSSD; P = .038]) were significantly higher in the menstrual phase. There were no correlations between CAR and HRV parameters. Conclusions We suggest that the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity and the autonomic nervous system work in a separate manner that is not affected by the menstrual phases in sportswomen. We retrospectively reviewed 507 CR-ESD procedures performed in 464 patients using SB Knife Jr. The primary endpoint was a learning curve to achieve a satisfactory complete resection rate. The secondary endpoints were learning curves to achieve a satisfactory

We tested whether KPT-350, a novel selective inhibitor of nuclear export, could attenuate cortical network hyperexcitability, a major risk factor for developing post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) following traumatic brain injury (TBI).
All mice in this study underwent TBI and were subsequently treated with either KPT-350 or vehicle during the post-injury latent period. Half of the animal cohort was used for electrophysiology while the other half was used for immunohistochemical analysis.
TBI was induced using the controlled cortical impact (CCI) model. Cortical network activity was recorded by evoking field potentials from deep layers of the cortex and analyzed using Matlab software. Immunohistochemistry coupled with fluorescence microscopy and Image J analysis detected changes in neuronal and glial markers.
KPT-350 attenuated TBI-associated epileptiform activity and restored disrupted input-output responses in cortical brain slices. In vivo KPT-350 treatment reduced the loss of parvalbumin-(+) GABAergic interneurons after CCI but did not significantly change CCI-induced loss of somatostatin-(+) GABAergic interneurons, nor did it reduce reactivity of GFAP and Iba1 glial markers.

We tested the ability of preschool children to use two simplified scales (concrete ordinal and faces). Three- to 5-year-olds (n = 123) were asked to make binary discriminations ('less' vs 'more' pain) between response options using the Simplified Faces Pain Scale and Simplified Concrete Ordinal Scale and to complete a seriation task. Eighty participants were also asked to use the Simplified Concrete Ordinal Scale, with modified verbal anchors, to rate the loudness of tones and to assess practice effects. Binary discrimination accuracy and seriation ability improved with age. When using the Simplified Concrete Ordinal Scale to rate the loudness of tones, even the 3-year-olds performed significantly better than chance, and performance was better in 4- and 5-year-olds. Little evidence supported the ability of 3-year-olds to use either of the simplified tools in the pain context. The 4-year-olds demonstrated greater accuracy in using the Simplified Concrete Ordinal Scale than the Simplified Faces Pain Scale, suggesting that the Simplified Concrete Ordinal Scale may be more appropriate for this age group.
