Potential triggers for equine asthma are allergens from hay and straw dusts, mold spores and storage mites. The contribution of these environmental trigger factors to equine asthma is still largely uncertain. The aim of this study was to compare results of four allergy tests from healthy and asthma-affected horses, and to evaluate the clinical relevance of allergens tested positive via specific inhalation provocation test. Fifteen horses were classified using a clinical scoring system as asthmatic (n = 9) or control (n = 6). Four different allergy tests (functional in vitro test, intradermal test, Fc-epsilon receptor test, and ELISA for allergen-specific IgE) were compared. A histamine inhalation provocation test as positive control was performed in all horses and the interpleural pressure was measured. In addition, two individual allergens were chosen for the allergen inhalation provocation test based on the results of the allergy tests and inhaled in increasing concentrations, until signs of dyspnea occurred. None of the four allergy tests could differentiate reliably between controls and asthma-affected horses. There was no agreement among the results of the four allergy tests. The interpleural pressure results showed a large individual variability. A clear positive reaction on the allergen inhalation provocation test was only detected in two asthma-affected horses 6 hours after allergen inhalation with Aspergillus fumigatus and Cladosporium herbarum. In most cases a purely type I immediate reaction is unlikely to be involved in causing the clinical signs of equine asthma. Because of a delayed reaction after allergen provocation in two horses, the involvement of cell-mediated type III or IV hypersensitivity may be possible. As all allergy tests used in this study can only detect IgE-mediated hypersensitivity, these tests are probably not suitable for an etiological diagnosis of equine asthma.In horses, it is well established that nutrients and the palatability of feed material (odor and taste) play an important role in diet selection. For example, high-fiber feed taste is not well accepted by horses. Consequently, manufacturers have begun to supplement horse feed with flavors to mask feed bitterness, to overcome feed neophobia and to encourage water drinking. However, only few studies have been performed to evaluate the acceptance and preference of flavors in horses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the acceptance and preference of flavors supplemented on top of concentrate offered to ponies. Thirty-three female Welsh ponies aged between four to 13 years were enrolled in the experiment. Ponies were offered 4 flavored concentrates and one control with no flavor. The flavored concentrates were anise, caramel, raspberry and apple. The inclusion rate of the flavors was 300 g/t on an as-is basis. During the adaptation period (one week), the ponies were gently guided to each bucket containing the flavored concentrate (200 g) during 10 sec/bucket for olfaction only. During the test period, ponies were allowed to freely choose flavored concentrates for 2 minutes. The flavors and the position of the buckets in front of the ponies were randomized. Each period was video-recorded and number of chews were counted during test period. The concentrate intake, eating time, and animal behavior were recorded during the test period. The apple concentrate was consumed the most at 116 g/2-min offering, whereas the raspberry and control concentrates were consumed the least, at 85.31 and 90.80 g/2-min offering, respectively. Apple flavor was preferred over caramel, raspberry and anise as indicated by higher consumption rate (g/sec) (chi-squared=16.68, df=4, P less then 0.05). check details There was no effects on chews, smell or headshaking time per sec between treatments. In conclusion, the ponies accepted a wide range of flavors with a preference for apple over raspberry flavored concentrate.The study aim is to compare the effects of epidural administration of two different doses of romifidine combined with morphine in horses. A prospective crossover blinded experimental design was used. Five adult healthy horses two males and three females with a mean body weight of 380 ± 45 Kg (335-425 kg), were studied. Treatments consisted of romifidine 30 μg/kg (R30) or 60 μg/kg (R60) combined with morphine 0.1 mg/kg with a washout interval of 72 hours, administered through an epidural catheter placed at the first intercoccygeal space. Heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (fR), pH, blood gases, arterial blood pressures (mmHg), and threshold for electrical noxious stimulation was evaluated for 120 minutes and after 240 minutes of epidural injection. Data were collected before injections and every 15 minutes for 120 minutes, and at 240 minutes of epidural administration. Significant sedation occurred in both treatments with no statistically significant difference between them. There were significant changes in fR and HR from baseline but no difference between treatments. Arterial blood pressures were significantly lower in R60 treatment from 75 up to 120 minutes post epidural injection. Analgesia was considered moderate for both treatments lasting longer with romifidine at 60 μg/kg. Epidurally administered romifidine and morphine combination in horses produces dose-dependent sedation, arterial hypotension, and antinociceptive effects.The microorganisms in the cecum of donkeys share similar functions as those in the rumen of cattle. Transformation of the cecal microenvironment by probiotics plays an important role in the health and growth of donkeys. In order to screen out excellent donkey probiotic preparations, in this study, we isolated an antibacterial strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (designated as DQB-1) from the cecum of Dezhou donkey. The strain was assessed in terms of antibacterial activity, antibacterial substance analysis, and stability. The results show that, the Bacillus amyloliquefaciens DQB-1 exhibited protease production activity and can significantly inhibit the growth of bacterial and fungal pathogens. The strongest antibacterial substance would be obtained after 24 hours of growth. The most suitable storage temperature for antibacterial extracts is -20 °C. The antibacterial substance produced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens DQB-1 isolated from donkeys has strong antibacterial activity, protease-producing activity and good stability.
