The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Discography
You would expect a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog band, but it is actually a fairly straight forward rock outfit. The band started out as a group and released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The band has a varied musical background but their biggest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, however it did not come without its share of problems. Record companies placed the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us a hit record or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on them to meet the deadline. Luckily for Toto, they did and they did it with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their previous experience since the members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior to forming the group. Their sonic signature has become the norm for '80s pop, and has influenced many modern artists.
he said begins hard with songs like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. The album also contains more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song mixes folk and the distorted AOR that could sound completely wrong but actually is very effective.
After Toto IV the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career, and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the band continued as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It was not as popular as IV. However, the band had a successful chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an attempt to return to the classic sextet format and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloying than previously recorded efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live concert in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after and then embarked on a tour around the world to support the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. It was completed as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album in the history of the band not to include one single track with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and singer Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes along with the other original members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally reforming the band. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was working with Yes at the period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
