The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an area of growth for toilets and bidet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto recorded Toto words so that the next generation could understand them. However, many of the words were being replaced with foreign ones, such as dui, which is Bengali for verandah.
Origins
The early history of Toto that began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's economic growth. In the beginning of its existence, the company made products to meet the demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. It was the first tunnel kiln in the nation to continuously produce ceramics. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.
In the late 1980s the company began to expand outwards to benefit from sales and new markets. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and market other products from other manufacturers to expand its line of sanitary earthenwares as well as plumbing fittings. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the company's market share in the world.
In the 1990s, Toto began to concentrate on research and development for water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better serve customers and increase profit. The company employed the same approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a higher level of satisfaction of customers.
Toto has continued to innovate with regard to toilet technology. Its latest toilet, for instance is equipped with a strong tornado flush that is more eco green than traditional toilets. The company makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. Toto also produces bathtubs, faucets, and hand dryers with higher energy efficiency than standard models.
The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It has exhibitions on the most iconic products of Toto and their evolution, the group companies (all of which are ceramics) and the history of plumbing and products such as bath units. In another gallery, visitors will find Toto products that are sold throughout. The museum also has a bathroom that features the WASHLET toilet, as well as other toilet-related innovations.
Before forming Toto the band, members of the group performed session work for a variety of musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich and guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather, drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You would expect a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog band however, it's actually a fairly straight forward rock outfit. The band began as four-piece, and released two albums in 1979, the self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background, but their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster but not without its issues. Record companies put the band on the spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that's a smash or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on to meet the deadline. Toto was able to achieve this with the help from the hit song "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experience. Before joining the group, the members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for '80s pop, influencing many modern artists.
The album begins hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. The album also features jazzier, slower tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distorted AOR and sounds completely wrong, but actually works amazingly well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band had to go through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. However, the band managed to release another chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked Toto's final lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the traditional sextet style and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard work was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous recordings.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after and embarked on a world tour to support the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the band's first album that did not contain one single track titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis condition which hampered his singing. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia, met in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was occupied with Yes at the time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
