The lack of awareness of HPV-related cancers is a significant factor in attitudes against HPV vaccination.The purpose of this pilot study was to test the efficacy of an online navigation training designed to improve trainee confidence in performing core patient navigation tasks among Nigerian nurses, patient advocates, and cancer survivors. The online training originally designed for US patient navigators was supplemented by a Nigerian health system interactive session. Nurses, advocates, and cancer survivors (n = 36) were recruited to take a patient navigation training from May-June 2020 that consisted of approximately 10 h of online content and a 2-h online session. Trainees enrolled in the no-cost training and completed all 20 lessons. Post-intervention interviews (n = 10) were conducted to garner feedback from trainees. Trainees reported statistically significant improvements in confidence in performing core competencies for cancer patient navigation across all lessons. Feedback was generally positive with trainees expressing satisfaction and appreciation for the training. Challenges included lack of free, broadband Internet access leading to data streaming costs on the part of trainees. Trainees who were oncology nurses indicated that funding, time, and staffing constraints could impede implementation of patient navigation in practice; but these trainees also expressed new ideas for patient support and advocacy to alleviate some barriers to care for their patients as a result of the training. This study provided preliminary data that supports the feasibility and utility of using the GW Cancer Center online patient navigation training in non-US settings. Small adaptations to training content and technological delivery could improve access to the training experience. Implementation science approaches are needed to inform sustainable patient navigation in low-resource settings.The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has mandated in-person shared decision-making (SDM) counseling with the use of one or more decision aids (DAs) prior to lung cancer screening. We developed a single-page, paper-based, encounter DA (EDA) to be used within a clinician-patient encounter for lung cancer screening and conducted a pre-post pilot intervention study to evaluate its feasibility and effects on patient decisional conflict. Patients referred to a pulmonary practice-based lung cancer screening program were surveyed before and after an SDM visit with a pulmonologist, who used the EDA to counsel the patient. Patient knowledge of the mortality benefit from screening and the frequency of abnormal screening test results was evaluated after the visit, while decisional conflict was measured before and after the visit using the Decisional Conflict Scale (DCS). Twenty-three patients participated (mean age = 65.8 years; 43% female; mean smoking history = 57.8 pack-years; 48% currently smoking). Following the visit, 28% of participants correctly understood the mortality benefit of lung cancer screening, while 82% understood the frequency of abnormal screening tests. In the present study, the antibiofilm potential of thymoquinone, a black seed-producing natural molecule, was contemplated against the biofilm formation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Substantial antimicrobial activity was exhibited by thymoquinone against the test organism wherein the minimum inhibitory concentration of the compound was found to be 20 μg/mL. Thereafter, an array of experiments (crystal violet staining, protein count, and microscopic observation, etc.) were carried out by considering the sub-MIC doses of thymoquinone (5 and 10 μg/mL), each of which confirmed the biofilm attenuating capacity of thymoquinone. However, these concentrations did not show any antimicrobial activity. Further explorations on understanding the underlying mechanism of the same revealed that thymoquinone accumulated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and also inhibited the expression of the quorum sensing gene (lasI) in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Furthermore, by taking up a combinatorial approach with two other reported antibiofilm agents (tetrazine-capped silver nanoparticles and tryptophan), the antibiofilm efficiency of thymoquinone was expanded. In this regard, the highest antibiofilm activity was observed when thymoquinone, tryptophan, and tetrazine-capped silver nanoparticles were applied together against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These combinatorial applications of antibiofilm molecules were found to accumulate ROS in cells that resulted in the inhibition of biofilm formation.
