The digital photoelasticity, the two-beam Pluta polarising interference microscope and the computed tomography are used to provide quantitative data and visual models of the fracture regions of isotactic polypropylene fibers suffering failure by fracture at different thermal and mechanical conditions. Brain injury rehabilitation is an expensive and long-term endeavour. Very little published information or debate has underpinned policy for service delivery in Australia. Within the context of finite health budgets and the challenges associated with providing optimal care to persons with brain injuries, members of the public were asked 'What considerations are important to include in a model of care of brain injury rehabilitation?'
Qualitative study using the Citizen Jury method of participatory research. Twelve adult jurors from the community and seven witnesses participated including a health services funding model expert, peak body representative with lived experience of brain injury, carer of a person with a brain injury, and brain injury rehabilitation specialists. Witnesses were cross-examined by jurors over two days.
Key themes related to the need for a model of rehabilitation to be consumer-focused and supporting the retention of hope; be long-term; provide equitable access to services irrespective of funding source; be inclusive of family; provide advocacy; raise public awareness; and be delivered by experts in a suitable environment. A set of eight recommendations were made.
Instigating the recommendations made requires careful consideration of the need for new models of care with flexible services; family involvement; recruitment and retention of highly skilled staff; and providing consumer-focused services that prepare individuals and their carers for the long term.

As jury members, the public deliberated information provided by expert witnesses (including a person with a head injury) and wrote the key recommendations.With their large body size and "slow" life histories, atelin primates are thought to follow a risk-averse breeding strategy, similar to capital breeders, in which they accumulate energy reserves in anticipation of future reproductive events such as gestation and lactation. However, given the paucity of longitudinal data from wild populations, few studies to date have been able to compare the timing of reproductive events (e.g., copulations, conceptions, and births) in relation to shifting resource availability over multiple years. We examined the reproductive patterns of two atelin species-white-bellied spider monkeys (Ateles belzebuth) and lowland woolly monkeys (Lagothrix lagotricha poeppigii)-in relation to habitat-wide estimates of fruit availability at the Tiputini Biodiversity Station (TBS) in Amazonian Ecuador. Our sample included 4 years of data on births (N = 36) and copulations (N = 170) for Lagothrix, 10 years of data on births (N = 35) and copulations (N = 74) for Ateles, and 7 years of data on ripe fruit availability. Reproductive events were distinctly seasonal. For both species, births were concentrated between May and September, a time period in which ripe fruit was relatively scarce, while inferred conceptions occurred between September and January, when ripe fruit availability was increasing and maintained at high-levels throughout the forest. Interannual variation in births was relatively stable, except for in 2016 when twice as many infants were born following a strong El Niño event that may have led to unusually high levels of fruit productivity during the 2015 breeding season. Although copulations were observed year-round, an overwhelming majority (>90% for Lagothrix and >80% for Ateles) took place between August and February when females were most likely to conceive. Collectively, these data follow the reproductive patterns observed in other atelin primates, and, as proposed by others, suggest that atelins may follow a risk-averse breeding strategy.
Temporal trends in colectomy rate for ulcerative colitis (UC) are particularly relevant in the current era of published IBD standards and changing approach to salvage of acute severe disease.
To investigate temporal trends in colectomy for UC using English population data.
The Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) were interrogated between 2003-2016 with two patient groups investigated independently. An 'emergency' cohort emergency UC admission≥three days, age ≥18 and a 'total population' cohort all English patients undergoing colectomy for UC. Mixed methods analyses were utilised.
Emergency cohort 37981 patients, 49% female, median age 46. The one- and three-year incidence of colectomy after acute admission was 0.17 and 0.21. Interrupted time series (ITS) analysis suggested reductions in colectomy rate of 4% per year after 2008 at 30 and 90days following emergency admission, with no significant reduction ≥1year. Mortality and laparoscopy rates improved when avoiding colectomy at index and emergency admissalvage and timely surgery.High salinity, one of the most widespread abiotic stresses, inhibits photosynthesis, reduces vegetation growth, blocks respiration and disrupts metabolism in plants. In order to survive their long-term lifecycle, trees, such as Populus species, recruit the abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway to adapt to a saline environment. However, the molecular mechanism behind the ABA-mediated salt stress response in woody plants remains elusive. We have isolated a WRKY transcription factor gene, PalWRKY77, from Populus alba var. pyramidalis (poplar), the expression of which is repressed by salt stress. PalWRKY77 decreases salt tolerance in poplar. Furthermore, PalWRKY77 negatively regulated ABA-responsive genes and relieved ABA-mediated growth inhibition, indicating that PalWRKY77 is a repressor of the ABA response. In vivo and in vitro assays revealed that PalWRKY77 targets the ABA- and salt-induced PalNAC002 and PalRD26 genes by binding to the W-boxes in their promoters. In addition, overexpression of both PalNAC002 and PalRD26 could elevate salt tolerance in transgenic poplars.
