Characterizing Thermodynamics associated with ProteinGlycosaminoglycan Friendships Using Isothermal Titration Calorimetry

PURPOSE Acute pain and resting arterial blood pressure (BP) are positively correlated in patients with chronic pain. However, it remains unclear whether treatment for chronic pain reduces BP. Therefore, in a retrospective study design, we tested the hypothesis that implantation of an epidural spinal cord stimulator (SCS) device to treat chronic pain would significantly reduce clinic pain ratings and BP and that these reductions would be significantly correlated. METHODS Pain ratings and BP in medical records were collected before and after surgical implantation of a SCS device at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics between 2008 and 2018 (n = 213). RESULTS Reductions in pain rating [6.3 ± 2.0 vs. 5.0 ± 1.9 (scale 0-10), P  less then  0.001] and BP [mean arterial pressure (MAP) 95 ± 10 vs. 89 ± 10 mmHg, P  less then  0.001] were statistically significant within 30 days of SCS. Interestingly, BP returned toward baseline within 60 days following SCS implantation. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that sex (P = 0.007), baseline MAP (P  less then  0.001), and taking hypertension (HTN) medications (P  less then  0.001) were significant determinants of change in MAP from baseline (Δ MAP) (model R2 = 0.33). After statistical adjustments, Δ MAP was significantly greater among women than among men ( - 7.2 ± 8.5 vs.  - 3.9 ± 8.5 mmHg, P = 0.007) and among patients taking HTN medications than among those not taking hypertension medications ( - 10.1 ± 8.7 vs.  - 3.9 ± 8.5 mmHg, P  less then  0.001), despite no group differences in change in pain ratings. CONCLUSIONS Together, these findings suggest that SCS for chronic pain independently produces clinically meaningful, albeit transient, reductions in BP and may provide a rationale for studies aimed at reducing HTN medication burden among this patient population.PURPOSE Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) experience developmental transitions. AYA survivors of cancer are at risk for chronic health conditions due to treatment. This study examined developmental differences in AYA survivors' health-related quality of life (HRQOL) between age groups and compared to population norms. METHODS HRQOL was assessed in AYA survivors of cancer (diagnosed before age 30) in long-term follow-up. Cancer survivors who were 12-39 years old at survey completion and completed therapy ≥ 2 years ago were included. HRQOL was assessed using the PedsQL™ and FACT. RESULTS Sample size was 155 survivors. PedsQL™ school functioning was worse in 15-17 year olds compared to 12-14 year olds (66.35 vs 77.60, p = 0.012). Compared to population norms, PedsQL™ outcomes were only worse in survivors' school functioning. Survivors' 18-39 years old had FACT scores that were better than population norms for overall HRQOL (91.33 vs 80.1, p  6 years post therapy. CONCLUSION A trend in school functioning issues in older adolescent survivors emerged. Older survivors show improved HRQOL when compared to the general population. Those further off therapy are at risk of poor HRQOL.BACKGROUND Despite improvements in intermittent hemodialysis management, intradialytic hemodynamic instability (IHI) remains a common issue that could account for increased mortality and delayed renal recovery. However, predictive factors of IHI remain poorly explored. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between baseline macrohemodynamic, tissue hypoperfusion parameters and IHI occurrence. METHODS Prospective observational study conducted in a 18-bed medical ICU of a tertiary teaching hospital. Cardiovascular SOFA score, index capillary refill time (CRT) and lactate level were measured just before (T0) consecutive intermittent hemodialysis sessions performed for AKI. The occurrence of IHI requiring a therapeutic intervention was recorded. Selleck Mivebresib RESULTS Two hundred eleven sessions, corresponding to 72 (34%) first sessions and 139 (66%) later sessions, were included. As IHI mostly occurred during first sessions (43% vs 12%, P  2 mmol/L (68% vs 29%, P = 0.0018). Moreover, the occurrence of IHI increased with the number of macrohemodynamic and tissue perfusion impaired parameters, named SOCRATE score (cardiovascular SOFA, index CRT and lactATE) 10% (95% CI [3%, 30%]), 33% (95% CI [15%, 58%]), 55% (95% CI [35%, 73%]) and 80% (95% CI [55%, 93%]) for 0, 1, 2 and 3 parameters, respectively (AUC = 0.79 [0.69-0.89], P  less then  0.0001). These results were confirmed by analyzing the 139 later sessions included in the study. CONCLUSIONS The SOCRATE score based on 3 easy-to-use bedside parameters correlates with the risk of IHI. By improving risk stratification of IHI, this score could help clinicians to manage intermittent hemodialysis initiation in critically ill AKI patients.In this manuscript, recent progress in the area of resistive random access memory (RRAM) technology which is considered one of the most standout emerging memory technologies owing to its high speed, low cost, enhanced storage density, potential applications in various fields, and excellent scalability is comprehensively reviewed. First, a brief overview of the field of emerging memory technologies is provided. The material properties, resistance switching mechanism, and electrical characteristics of RRAM are discussed. Also, various issues such as endurance, retention, uniformity, and the effect of operating temperature and random telegraph noise (RTN) are elaborated. A discussion on multilevel cell (MLC) storage capability of RRAM, which is attractive for achieving increased storage density and low cost is presented. Different operation schemes to achieve reliable MLC operation along with their physical mechanisms have been provided. In addition, an elaborate description of switching methodologies and current voltage relationships for various popular RRAM models is covered in this work. The prospective applications of RRAM to various fields such as security, neuromorphic computing, and non-volatile logic systems are addressed briefly. The present review article concludes with the discussion on the challenges and future prospects of the RRAM.
