Descriptively, children in the dysregulated sleep group had fewer NSSCRs and lower SCL in the afternoon. The analysis revealed that ambient lighting and stress level are the factors that most impact emotional wellbeing. To a lesser extent, being able to take a break, ambient temperature and ambient noise play a relatively determining role. The findings of this work can be used to establish a living environment for older persons that favours their emotional wellbeing. Practitioner summary This study analyses the level of influence of a set of ambient factors on the emotional wellbeing of older people, conducting, to this end, a series of controlled experiments, and concluding that ambient lighting and stress level are the factors most relevant to promote a better living environment.KEY POINTSOlder adults' emotional interpretation of pictures depends on the environment and ambient factors.Ambient factors, such as lighting and stress, have a significant, positive effect on visual interpretation of stimuli and greater wellbeing.The use of soft computing techniques facilitates the quantification of the influence of factors affecting emotional wellbeing.Gastrointestinal disorders are one of the most significant non-motor problems affecting people with Parkinson disease (PD). Pathogenetically, the gastrointestinal tract has been proposed to be the initial site of pathological changes in PD. Intestinal inflammation and alterations in the gut microbiota may contribute to initiation and progression of pathology in PD. However, the mechanisms underlying this "gut-brain" axis in PD remain unclear. PD patients can display a large variety of gastrointestinal symptoms, leading to reduced quality of life and psychological distress. Gastrointestinal disorders can also limit patients' response to medications, and consequently negatively impact on neurological outcomes. Despite an increasing research focus, gastrointestinal disorders in PD remain poorly understood and their clinical management often suboptimal. This review summarises our understanding of the relevance of the "gut-brain" axis to the pathogenesis of PD, discusses the impact of gastrointestinal disorders in patients with PD, and provides clinicians with practical guidance to their management.Purpose Orbital tumor surgery can be challenging when the tumor is located in a very narrow surgical field and close to important structures, such as nerves or extraocular muscles that can be damaged during surgery. Advances in technology and special surgical techniques help to avoid such damage. We describe our experience using SONOPET® ultrasonic surgical aspirator to remove 12 different orbital tumors that were difficult to treat due to their poorly defined borders, adhesions, or location.Methods This is a retrospective case series that describes 12 operations that occurred between March 2016 to December 2018 using an ultrasonic device to debulk or remove orbital tumors. Different approaches and handpieces were used for each case depending on the location and consistency of the tumor.Results All patients experienced an improvement in preoperative signs and symptoms, pain, proptosis, diplopia, or lagophthalmos. Visual acuity, which had been reduced due to the tumor, was also recovered. There were no intraoperative or postoperative complications due to the use of the device.Conclusions The ultrasonic aspirator is a safe, useful device that can successfully remove or debulk infiltrating orbital masses through any orbital access, regardless of their consistency. It is helpful in cases of difficult anatomical access or difficult extraction due to size or adhesions to the surrounding tissues.Digital health and technologies are essential to curbing the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic especially with shelter-in-place and social distancing orders. Epidemiologists and public health officials are tapping into frequently used technologies like wearables, digital devices, digital and social media data to detect and validate COVID-19 symptoms throughout the pandemic, especially during early stages when symptoms were evolving. In this article, we review how digital technologies and social media platforms can identify and inform our understanding of COVID-19 pandemic surveillance and recovery efforts. We analyze Reddit narrative posts and comments on r/covidlonghaulers to demonstrate how social media can be used to better understand COVID-19 pandemic. Using Reddit data, we highlight long haulers' patient journeys and shed light on potential consequences of their condition. We identified 21 themes, of which the following were significantly associated with valence COVID-19 Symptoms (r = -0.037), medical advice (r = -0.030), medical system (r = -0.029), bodily processes (r = -0.020), questions (r = 0.024), physical activity (r = 0.033), self-differentials and negations (r = 0.040) and supplements (r = 0.025). Our brief literature review and analysis of r/covidlonghaulers narrative posts demonstrate the value of digital technologies and social media platforms as they act as modern avenues for public health, safety, and well-being.
