Therefore, there has been a great interest recently for developing new strategies to reinforce hydrogels. Moreover, food gels must be edible in terms of both raw materials and production. This paper reviews innovative techniques such as particle/fiber-reinforced hydrogel, double network, dual crosslinking, freeze-thaw cycles, physical conditioning and soaking methods to improve the mechanical properties of hydrogels. Additionally, their fundamental mechanisms, advantages and disadvantages have been discussed. Important biopolymers that have been employed for these strategies and also their potentials in food applications have been summarized. The general mechanism of these strategies is based on increasing the degree of crosslinking between interacting polymers in hydrogels. These links can be formed by adding fillers (oil droplets or fibers in filled gels) or cross-linkers (regarding double network and soaking method) and also by condensation or alignment of the biopolymers (freeze-thaw cycle and physical conditioning) in the gel network. The properties of particle/fiber-reinforced hydrogels extremely depend on the filler, gel matrix and the interaction between them. In freeze-thaw cycles and physical conditioning methods, it is possible to form new links in the gel network without adding any cross-linkers or fillers. It is expected that the utilization of gels will get broader and more varied in food industries by using these strategies.This review covers experimental results of evaporative lithography and analyzes existing mathematical models of this method. A method called evaporative lithography emerged after the connection between the coffee ring effect taking place in drying colloidal droplets and naturally occurring inhomogeneous vapor flux densities from liquid-vapor interfaces was established. Essential control of the colloidal particle deposit patterns is achieved in this method by producing ambient conditions that induce a nonuniform evaporation profile from the colloidal liquid surface. EISA involves methods based on contact line processes, methods employing particle interaction effects, and evaporative lithography. As a rule, evaporative lithography is a flexible and single-stage process with such advantages as simplicity, low price, and the possibility of application to almost any substrate without pretreatment. Since there is no mechanical impact on the template in evaporative lithography, the template integrity is preserved in the process. The method is also useful for creating materials with localized functions, such as slipperiness and self-healing. For these reasons, evaporative lithography attracts increasing attention and has a number of noticeable achievements at present. We also analyze limitations of the approach and ways of its further development.Hydrogels have emerged as promising antimicrobial materials due to their unique three-dimensional structure, which provides sufficient capacity to accommodate various materials, including small molecules, polymers and particles. Coating substrates with antibacterial hydrogel layers has been recognized as an effective strategy to combat bacterial colonization. To prevent possible delamination of hydrogel coatings from substrates, it is crucial to attach hydrogel layers via stronger links, such as covalent bonds. To date, various surface chemical strategies have been developed to introduce hydrogel coatings on different substrates. In this review, we first give a brief introduction of the major strategies for designing antibacterial coatings. Then, we summarize the chemical methods used to fix the antibacterial hydrogel layer on the substrate, which include surface-initiated graft crosslinking polymerization, anchoring the hydrogel layer on the surface during crosslinking, and chemical crosslinking of layer-by-layer coating. The reaction mechanisms of each method and matched pretreatment strategies are systemically documented with the aim of introducing available protocols to researchers in related fields for designing hydrogel-coated antibacterial surfaces.
Sleep disorders are common problems among all age groups. If sleep problems detected in childhood are not resolved successfully, they become sleep disorders and a chronic state. In this study, we aimed to compare sleep problems between preterm-born and term-born preschool-age children.
In the cross-sectional study, children were grouped according to whether they were born preterm or at term. The preterm group included 137 children aged four to six years. The control group comprised 145 age-matched term-born preschool children. The prenatal, natal, demographical, and clinical characteristics of preterm- and term-born preschool-age children were compared. The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) was used to identify sleep problems. The total score and subscores of the CSHQ were compared between the groups.
The percentage of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) symptoms and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) symptoms were significantly higher in the preterm group. According to the cutoff point of the CSHQ, 97 GER and OAS should be investigated, and precautions, such as prohibiting maternal cigarette smoking, should be taken in preterm infants.
