Physical fitness (PF) and physical activity (PA) are inversely associated with body mass index and waist circumference (WC), whereas sedentary time (ST) seems to boost obesity in youth. The aim was to examine the associations of each selected PF test, PA-related exposures, and specific ST patterns with obesity and determine the most relevant ones, in a large sample of a school-aged adolescent.
The sample consisted of 2696 Portuguese youth aged 10 to 18 years. Height, weight, and WC were measured. Eganelisib datasheet PA and ST components were measured using accelerometry. PF was evaluated using a battery of tests.
The Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER) and push-up tests seemed to be the exposures that presented the strongest and more consistent associations with obesity, independent of PA/ST profiles (P < .05). The second exposure of relevance for adolescent obesity level was the breaks in ST with a negative relationship regardless of PA/PF profiles (P < .05). Finally, ST accumulated in periods of <30 minutes, and moderate-to-vigorous PA were favorably associated with obesity, independent of ST/PF.
Independent of PA and ST, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), measured by PACER, was associated with obesity markers. This may be in part due to the dependence of PACER performance on adiposity. Also, limiting prolonged ST and promoting interruptions in this behavior were associated with obesity. These associations suggest that future research should examine other strategies beyond PA promotion for tackling obesity that consider CRF and breaking ST.

The diphenylalanine hierarchical nanostructures (FF-HNs) are self-assembled by vertically pulling a substrate from a diphenylalanine (FF) solution dissolved in a miscible solvent under precisely controlled conditions. Owing to the unique structural properties of FF nanostructures, including high crystallinity and α-helix structures, FF-HNs possess a net electrical dipole moment, which can be switched in an external electric field. The mass production of antiferroelectric devices based on FF-HNs can be successfully achieved by means of this biomimetic assembly technique. The devices show an evident antiferroelectric to ferroelectric transition under dark conditions, while the ferroelectricity is found to be tunable by light. Notably, it is discovered that the modulation of antiferroelectric behaviors of FF-HNs under glutaraldehyde exposure is due to the FF molecules that are transformed into cyclophenylalanine by glutaraldehyde. This work provides a stepping stone toward the mass production of self-assembled hierarchical nanostructures based on biomolecules as well as the mass fabrication of electronic devices based on biomolecular nanostructures for practical applications.
To study compliance with menopausal hormonal therapy (MHT) until age ≥ 50 year and health consequences after surgical menopause.
A retrospective cohort study of 1000 consecutive surgically menopausal patients who underwent premenopausal surgery before 50 years of age from benign indications during 1996-2012 was performed. Main outcomes were number in year of MHT compliance and health consequences hypertension (HT), diabetes mellitus (DM), dyslipidemia (DLP), ischemic heart disease (IHD)/myocardial infarction (MI), venous thromboembolism (VTE), stoke, osteopenia/osteoporosis, cognitive impairment/dementia/Alzheimer's disease (AD) /Parkinsonism and breast/other cancers. The MHT nonuser subgroup served as the control.
Of the 1000 patients, 855 cases used MHT. The median overall follow-up time from surgery for 145 MHT nonuser patients, 435 MHT users until age <50 year and 420 MHT users until age ≥50 year was 12.0 years. Compliance until age ≥50 year was only 49.1%. For MHT users, the overall median age of stopping MHT was 47.0 year with a median MHT use of 6.0 year. After age adjustment at the time of follow-up of all subgroups by forward stepwise logistic regression analysis, the only significantly different health consequence was osteopenia (32.4%, 10.6% and 21.4% in the MHT nonusers, users until age <50 year and users until age ≥50 year, respectively [P < 0.001]). Prevalence of breast cancer, colon cancer and other cancers were not different among subgroups.
The majority of patients used MHT with low compliance until age ≥50 year. In addition, MHT initiation after surgery possibly prevented osteopenia compared with MHT nonusers.

The traditional mechanism is to precisely calibrate multiple optical components to convert circular Gaussian beams into elliptical Gaussian beams, making it difficult to shape multiwavelength lasers simultaneously. A diffractive beam shaper for multicolor lasers with high simplicity, only containing one diffractive optical element and one focusing lens is created in this work. It can produce rectangular spots, of which the number, the sizes, and the positions are accurately determined by the incident wavelengths. Demonstrated in the customized microflow cytometer, the coefficient of variations (CV) of the optical signals by the beam shaper are 3.6-6.5%, comparable to those derived from the commercial instrument with 3.3-6.3% CVs. Benefiting from the narrow rectangular spots and the flexibility of diffractively shaped lasers, the measurement of bead sizes with 4-15 μm diameters and the real-time detection of flow velocity from 0.
