Postnatal systemic CSs reduced the rate and severity of BPD, yet their long-term neurodevelopmental and respiratory consequences markedly limit routine administration. This is the first in a two-part State-of-the-Art series that reviews the latest relevant clinical trials investigating the short-term and long-term effects of CSs in the prevention and treatment of BPD.
A risk associated with cystic fibrosis newborn screening (CFNBS) is parental misunderstanding of genetic information generated by the over 6600 positive screens reported annually in the United States. CFNBS algorithms incorporating DNA analysis can generate genetic information that requires clinical interpretation and has significance for the newborn, parents, and other relatives. Engagement between CF care centers and trained genetic counseling providers, such as licensed and/or certified genetic counselors (GCs), is variable and limited in providing information to CFNBS positive (CFNBS+) families.
Using a modified Delphi process, a workgroup of CFNBS experts developed recommendation statements for engagement of genetic counseling services in CF care centers where CFNBS + diagnostic evaluations are performed. Statements were assessed over three rounds of surveys, one face-to-face meeting, and through public feedback.
Seventeen statements achieved >80% consensus (range 82%-100%). The workgroup affirme the education of providers, and develop opportunities for access via telemedicine.
Coughing is a common symptom in pediatric lung disease and cough frequency has been shown to be correlated to disease activity in several conditions. Automated cough detection could provide a noninvasive digital biomarker for pediatric clinical trials or care. The aim of this study was to develop a smartphone-based algorithm that objectively and automatically counts cough sounds of children.
The training set was composed of 3228 pediatric cough sounds and 480,780 noncough sounds from various publicly available sources and continuous sound recordings of 7 patients admitted due to respiratory disease. A Gradient Boost Classifier was fitted on the training data, which was subsequently validated on recordings from 14 additional patients aged 0-14 admitted to the pediatric ward due to respiratory disease. The robustness of the algorithm was investigated by repeatedly classifying a recording with the smartphone-based algorithm during various conditions.
The final algorithm obtained an accuracy of 99.7%, sensitivity of 47.6%, specificity of 99.96%, positive predictive value of 82.2% and negative predictive value 99.8% in the validation dataset. The correlation coefficient between manual- and automated cough counts in the validation dataset was 0.97 (p < .001). The intra- and interdevice reliability of the algorithm was adequate, and the algorithm performed best at an unobstructed distance of 0.5-1 m from the audio source.

Previous meta-analyses concluded that there is a decline in sperm parameters over time. This conclusion might be incorrect due to inherent biases or focusing only on a single parameter - sperm concentration.
To study trends in sperm parameters over the past 20 years using data from the trials that defined the reference ranges of the World Health Organization manual.
Retrospective evaluation of the data used to define the World Health Organization reference ranges. The data from 11 studies, including 3589 participants between 1996 and 2016, were divided into three period groups based on the decade of study. Differences in semen parameters' distribution were presented in boxplot. p-values were calculated by the Kruskal-Wallis rank-sum test followed by Dunn post hoc test. Analyses were conducted using the R programming language.
A small decrease was noted in mean sperm concentrations (88.1 million/ml, 87.6 million/ml, and 77.2 million/ml for the first, second, and third decades, respectively) (p<0.01). However, the 5th percentile of sperm concentration for the third decade was higher than the first or second decades (18 million/ml versus 14.9 million/ml and 15 million/ml, respectively). No significant differences were noted in progressive motility over the years (p=0.32). The percent of morphologically normal sperm decreased between the first (24.2%) and the second (12.6%) periods of the study (p<0.001) and then increased in the third decade (14.2%) (p<0.01). Total motile sperm count (TMC) declined between the second and third decades (189 million and 153.9 million, respectively, p<0.001), at levels unlikely to decrease fertility. However, the 5th percentile of the TMC remained stable at 24.9, 20.8, and 20.6 million, for the first, second, and third decades respectively (p=0.36).

Despite increased interest in WBI worldwide, cross-cultural research is limited by the lack of availability of validated measures. The aim of the current study was therefore to translate into Greek and validate the Modified Weight Bias Internalization Scale (WBIS-M), the most widely used instrument in the measurement of WBI. An online convenience sample of 642 participants (364 women and 278 men) completed the Greek translation of the WBIS-M and validated the measures of satisfaction with appearance, investment in appearance, weight/appearance anxiety, body appreciation, dysfunctional eating habits and global self-esteem to assess convergent validity. Principal factor and confirmatory analyses revealed that the WBIS-M upheld its one-factor structure. The WBIS-M showed adequate internal consistency, convergent validity and 3-week test-retest reliability. These findings provide support for the cross-cultural equivalence of the WBIS-M and for the utility of this measure in Greek-speaking populations.Soil salinity is one abiotic stress that threatens agriculture in more than 100 countries. Gliricidia [Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Kunth] is a multipurpose tree known for its ability to adapt to a wide range of soils; however, its tolerance limits and responses to salt stress are not yet well understood. In this study, after characterizing the morphophysiological responses of young gliricidia plants to salinity stress, leaf metabolic and transcription profiles were generated and submitted to single and integrated analyses. RNA from leaf samples were subjected to RNA sequencing using an Illumina HiSeq platform and the paired-end strategy. Polar and lipidic fractions from leaf samples were extracted and analyzed on an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled with electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) system. Acquired data were analyzed using the OmicsBox, XCMS Online, MetaboAnalyst, and Omics Fusion platforms. The substrate salinization protocol used allowed the identification of two distinct responses to salt stress tolerance and adaptation. Single analysis on transcriptome and metabolome data sets led to a group of 5,672 transcripts and 107 metabolites differentially expressed in gliricidia leaves under salt stress. The phenylpropanoid biosynthesis was the most affected pathway, with 15 metabolites and three genes differentially expressed. Results showed that the differentially expressed metabolites and genes from this pathway affect mainly short-term salt stress (STS). The single analysis of the transcriptome identified 12 genes coding for proteins that might play a role in gliricidia response at both STS and long-term salt stress (LTS). Further studies are needed to reveal the mechanisms behind the adaptation response.Nonlinear dynamical systems serving reservoir computing enrich the physical implementation of computing systems. To report on the clinical, laboratory, and radiological findings of adolescents who presented during the SARS-CoV-2 surge with symptoms of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), did not test positive for the infection, and were diagnosed with E-cigarette and vaping product use associated lung injury (EVALI).
A retrospective review of 12 cases of EVALI admitted to the Bristol Meyers Squibb Children's Hospital between February 2020 and June 2020 was conducted.

(Compositae) has been extensively used for medicinal purposes. As other representatives of the genus it is implemented in the treatment of liver disorders and used as diuretic and digestive agent. Previous studies have determined the predominant classes of secondary metabolites in Carduus species. Among the major representatives of their extracts flavonoids, phenolic acids, coumarins, sterols and terpenes were identified. The antiradical capacity of three extracts assessed in the DPPH test revealed the highest radical scavenging properties of methanol extract (the EC50 618±10.03 μg/mL) and based on these results it was selected for phenolic content determination. To understand better the induced pharmacological effects of the plant the aim of the study was to determine the composition of the methanol extract from the inflorescences of C. nutans and to study their phenolic composition.
