Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have been intensively investigated over the last decade owing to its wide-scale environmentally friendly applications, among which wastewater treatment, power generation and environmental monitoring for pollutants are prominent. Different variants of BES such as microbial fuel cell, microbial electrolysis cell, microbial desalination cell, enzymatic fuel cell, microbial solar cell, have been studied. These microbial bioelectrocatalytic systems have clear advantages over the existing analytical techniques for sustainable on-site application in wide environmental conditions with minimum human intervention, making the technology irrevocable and economically feasible. The key challenges to establish this technology are to achieve stable and efficient interaction between the electrode surface and microorganisms, reduction of time for start-up and toxic-shock recovery, sensitivity improvement in real-time conditions, device miniaturization and its long-term economically feasible commercial application. This review article summarizes the recent technical progress regarding bio-electrocatalytic processes and the implementation of BESs as a biosensor for determining various compositional characteristics of water and wastewater. AIM The "Sniffin' Sticks" test is widely used in Europe as a standard test to assess olfaction. Several culturally-adapted versions have been developed. However, no version adapted to Sub-Saharan African populations exists. The aims of the present study were (1) to assess the applicability of the Sniffin' Sticks test in the population of South Kivu (DR Congo), and (2) to develop a culturally adapted version with normative values. MATERIALS AND METHODS In a first study, 157 volunteers were tested with the original Sniffin' Sticks test. Based on these results, we selected odors that were poorly recognized in the identification test and replaced them by culturally adapted odors. In a second study, we assessed the modified version of the Sniffin' Sticks test in 150 volunteers and defined normative values. RESULTS In the first study, we found that olfactory function (threshold-discrimination-identification TDI score) significantly decreased with age and was better in females. Five odors were poorly recognized and were replaced by culturally adapted odors. In the second study, we found that this adapted version led to a higher rate of correctly identified odors. We defined normative values for the South-Kivu population (TDI score 18-35 years 30.4±6.0; 36-55 years 26.2±5.3; >55 years 25.6±5.0). CONCLUSION This culturally adapted version of the Sniffin' Sticks test is culturally adapted to the South Kivu population. The normative values will provide the basis for clinical evaluation of pathologic subjects. SN-38 datasheet The hyperplastic phenotype of fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) plays an important role for synovitis, chronic inflammation and joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Interleukin 17A (IL-17A), a signature pro-inflammatory cytokine effectively influences the hyperplastic transformation of FLS cells and synovial pannus growth. IL-17A cytokine signalling participates in RA pathology by regulating an array of pro-inflammatory mediators and osteoclastogenesis. Cyanidin, a key flavonoid inhibits IL-17A/IL-17 receptor A (IL-17RA) interaction and alleviates progression and disease severity of psoriasis and asthma. However, the therapeutic efficacy of cyanidin on IL-17A cytokine signalling in RA remains unknown. In the present study, cyanidin inhibited IL-17A induced migratory and proliferative capacity of FLS cells derived from adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA) rats. Cyanidin treatment reduced IL-17A mediated reprogramming of AA-FLS cells to overexpress IL-17RA. In addition, significantly decreased expression of IL-17A dependent cyr61, IL-23, GM-CSF, and TLR3 were observed in AA-FLS cells in response to cyanidin. At the molecular level, cyanidin modulated IL-17/IL-17RA dependent JAK/STAT-3 signalling in AA-FLS cells. Importantly, cyanidin activated PIAS3 protein to suppress STAT-3 specific transcriptional activation in AA-FLS cells. Cyanidin treatment to AA rats attenuated clinical symptoms, synovial pannus growth, immune cell infiltration, and bone erosion. Cyanidin reduced serum level of IL-23 and GM-CSF and expression of Cyr 61 and TLR3 in the synovial tissue of AA rats. Notably, the level of p-STAT-3 protein was significantly decreased in the synovial tissue of AA rats treated with cyanidin. This study provides the first evidence that cyanidin can be used as IL-17/17RA signalling targeting therapeutic drug for the treatment of RA and this need to be investigated in RA patients. BACKGROUND Microwave (MWA) and radiofrequency ablation are the commonly used local ablation for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Studies comparing both techniques are scarce. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of MWA versus RFA as a treatment for HCC. METHODS Patients with HCC who were suitable for local ablation were randomized into MWA or RFA. All patients were followed up regularly with contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) performed at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after ablation. Both patients and the radiologists who interpreted the post-procedure CT scans were blinded to the treatment allocation. Treatment-related morbidity, overall and disease-free survivals were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 93 patients were recruited. Among them, 47 and 46 patients were randomized to MWA and RFA respectively. Patients in two groups were comparable in baseline demographics and tumor characteristics. With a median follow-up of around 30 months, there were no significant difference in the treatment-related morbidity, overall and disease-free survivals. MWA had a significantly shorter overall ablation time when compared with RFA (12 min vs 24 min, p  less then  0.001). CONCLUSIONS MWA is no different to RFA with respect to completeness of ablation and survivals. It is, however, as safe and effective as RFA in treating small HCC. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and the factors associated with symptomatic oral lichen planus (OLP). STUDY DESIGN Patients with OLP seen for an initial visit were assessed retrospectively. Initial visit data included demographic characteristics; social, medical, and OLP treatment histories; medications; chief complaints, 0 to 10 pain level; OLP duration and symptoms; OLP type and location; total OLP lesion size (mm2); total ulcer size (mm2); and fungal infection and its management. Follow-up data included 0 to 10 pain level and total lesion and ulcer sizes. RESULTS We assessed 205 patients 154 (75%) were women, and the mean (standard deviation [SD]) age was 62.5 (11.5) years. The mean (SD) current pain level was 1.6 (2.2) at the initial visit. A total of 125 patients (61%) were classified as symptomatic, including 85 (41%) patients reporting a pain level of 1 or greater and another 40 patients (20%) who had symptoms not described as pain at the initial visit.
