Industrial biotechnology (IB) uses biological and biochemical processes in industrial production and is often regarded as an emerging key technology revolutionizing the production of many products while protecting resources and the environment and fostering economic development. This contribution describes the background and sketches the content of the volume 'Sustainability and Life Cycle Assessment of Industrial Biotechnology' in the Springer series 'Advances in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology'. The field of IB is introduced from different perspectives (milestones in IB history, economics of biotechnology industry, environmental and social as well as ethical issues and impacts, green chemistry) and in several applications fields (production of chemicals, geobiotechnology in mining).Otomycosis is a common finding in otorhinolaryngology clinics and is usually caused by species of Candida and Aspergillus, particularly black aspergilli. Meanwhile, other fungi can give rise to this infection, and the identification of these requires accurate methods. Here, we report three cases of otomycosis due to rare fungal pathogens. All the patients were young females, and manipulation of the ear canal was identified as a common potentially predisposing factor. In direct examination, filamentous fungal elements (in one case) and yeast cells (in two other cases) were seen. AZD1208 cell line Culture was positive in all cases. Based on PCR-sequencing of internal transcribed spacers and β-tubulin (for mold isolate), the isolated fungi were identified as Talaromyces purpurogenus, Naganishia albida and Filobasidium magnum. By susceptibility testing of the isolates to fluconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole and amphotericin B, the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration values were observed for amphotericin B followed by voriconazole. Patients were successfully treated by a combination of antifungals and corticosteroids with no relapse over the next year, except for the case due to F. magnum, in which, despite partial recovery, a course of relapse was reported in the 1-year follow-up call. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is the most prominent urban agglomeration in China, with plans for further development. Using the regional collaboration theoretical framework for assessing urban comprehensive carrying capacity (UCC), the improved entropy method is applied to establish an index system based on a social, economic, environment, and transportation perspective to compare UCCs of the GBA's 11 cities for 2000-2016. Results show that the social subsystem is central to the evaluation system. Cities' performances vary significantly, with six becoming overloaded in 2016 and the other five remaining loadable. Guangzhou performed best, with a rising UCC; Shenzhen rebounded after a long period of decline; Hong Kong's capacity rose slightly, with some fluctuation; and Macao performed worse and continues to slide, with no signs of improvement. Overall, the UCC of the urban agglomeration showed a downward trend, with only a few cities continuing to improve. The spatial distribution for UCC was high in the north and low in the south, showing scope for improvement. The study enriches regional collaboration theory and proposes policy implications for GBA development.Aluminum chloride (AlCl3) has different industrial applications including manufacturing paint and water treatment. The present study was designed to evaluate the alleviating effect of geraniol against AlCl3-induced hepatopancreatic toxicity. To this end, forty male Wistar rats were divided into control (0.9% NaCl, IP), geraniol (100 mg/kg orally), AlCl3 (70 mg/kg, IP), and AlCl3 (70 mg/kg, IP) plus geraniol (100 mg/kg orally) groups and then were treated daily for 28 days. Based on the results, serum cholesterol, triglyceride, as well as liver and pancreas enzymes increased significantly (P  less then  0.05) while the level of insulin significantly decreased in AlCl3-treated rats compared to the control group (P  less then  0.05). The presence of geraniol relieved the toxic effects of AlCl3 as well. On the other hand, the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) increased in the AlCl3-treated group while the activities of glutathione peroxidase and the total antioxidant activity demonstrated a reduction. However, the MDA level decreased while the antioxidant enzymes increased in co-treated with geraniol group. Histopathological examination revealed that simultaneous treatment with geraniol in AlCl3 intoxicated rats ameliorate the liver lesions such as necrosis, inflammatory cell infiltration, vacuolar degeneration, along with hyperemia and the cell density of the Langerhans islands. Finally, the results indicated that geraniol attenuated the side effect of AlCl3-induced hepatopancreatic toxicity.Intensive use of the chlorinated pesticide chlordecone from the 1970s to 1993 to prevent crop damage in banana plantations of Guadeloupe and Martinique led to diffuse pollution of soils and surface waters, affecting both fauna and human beings in the contaminated areas. Since 2001, drinking water production plants have been equipped with filters containing activated carbon that must be treated after saturation. The objective of this work is to produce a hybrid material composed of activated carbon and vitamin B12 (VB12) for the degradation of chlordecone (CLD). The preparation of such a hybrid material is carried out by non-covalent fixation to achieve an eco-friendly solution for the serious environmental problem of contamination by chlorinated pesticides. It is thus proposed to degrade CLD by a physico-chemical treatment allowing salvage of the catalyst, which is adsorbed on the carbon surface to generate less waste that is inexpedient to treat. Activated carbon (AC) is produced locally from available sugarcane bagasse subjected to phosphoric acid activation. The main characteristics of this material are a major mesoporous structure (0.91%) and a specific (BET) surface area ranging from 1000 to 1500 m2 g-1. The experimental results showed that BagP1.5 has a high adsorption capacity for VB12 due to its large surface area (1403 m2 g-1). The binding of VB12 to the bagasse-derived AC is favoured at high temperatures. The adsorption is optimal at a pH of approximately 6. The maximum adsorption capacity of VB12 on the AC, deduced from the Langmuir model, was 306 mg g-1, confirming the high affinity between the two components. The hybrid material was characterised by FTIR, Raman, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and SEM analysis. CLD removal by this hybrid material was faster than that by VB12 or BagP1.5 alone. The CLD degradation products were characterised by mass spectrometry.
