It was followed by The Mirror (24.1 million people, 48% reach) and Mail Online (24 million people, 48% reach). Among the whole list of top 50 sites, fastest-growing was Reach’s Edinburgh Live (3.3 million visitors, up 7% month-on-month), followed by Washington Post (3.9 million visitors, up 53%) and Women’s Health (3.3 million visitors, up 31%). Five of the top ten fastest growing sites were local (or sub-UK level) newsbrands - all owned by national and regional publishing giant Reach.
Though advertising is the focus of the data collection industry, the applications of user data are boundless. Law enforcement agencies have tapped the oceans of user data, including for the targeting of protesters and activist groups. Powerful political interests have hired data brokers to better influence voters. The data broker Acxiom, another tech firm that partners with many news websites, has provided data to the FBI and discussed programs to sell user data to the Pentagon.
This organization concentrates almost all the political power in this one region. In the same way, according to the annual report published by the Central Bank of Chile for 2016 [53], the Metropolitan Region participated with 46% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (5x the next highest contribution). With this heavily concentrated power in all spheres, and based on our set of hypothesis, the capital of Chile matches all the conditions needed by a population to receive an extensive media coverage. If anything, the “old” news industry has evolved and has adapted to the new environment. Being able to detect this kind of behavior in the media is of utmost importance. For example, a socioeconomic bias in the media system can be very damaging as it may exacerbate the gap between rich and poor areas.
Lo Prado, despite being located within the capital city, is ranked in the top ten of the poorest communes of Chile [51]. On the other hand, San Miguel, even though it is a predominantly residential commune, it is also an important economic/industrial pole of the city. In fact, San Miguel ranks in the 40th position out of 93 communes in the Index of Urban Quality of Life for Chile [51]. Thus, the hypothesis of our theoretical models in the political economy of the mass medial [1, 2] supports the idea that the socioeconomic characteristics of a sector can make its population more or less attractive to the media.
It follows a slow June for most of the UK’s household news names when only four top ten brands recorded year-on-year audience growth. Mail Online also scored well on time per user, with audiences spending an average of 76 minutes with its content, second only to the BBC (264 minutes). The third-largest newsbrand in the top 50 by audience, The Sun, also saw a large drop (audience of 22.8 million, down 19%). The BBC was once again at the top of the table for most time spent with its content (9.7 billion minutes in October), followed by Mail Online (1.7 billion minutes) and The Guardian (1.2 billion minutes). Year-on-year once again GB News, which launched a new .com URL in March last year, saw the biggest growth with an audience of 8.2 million, up 394% compared to last November.
When it comes to monthly growth in visits, local news sites again led the way. Visits to the website of Reach title the Liverpool Echo were up 10% on last month at 15.8m, while the 24.4m visits to the website of the Manchester Evening News, the UK’s most popular online local news brand, represented an 8% increase on March. Russian state-funded English news site RT.com also made the top five for growth with its 4.8m visits in April – an increase of 5% on last month. Leicester Live, one of several digital newsbrands launched by Reach in recent years, was the second fastest growing site, with year-on-year visits up 70% from 3.2m to 5.4m. It was followed in third place by another Reach brand, Birmingham Live, which saw visits increase 67% from 8.4m to 14.1m. Examiner Live, which got a boost after it was rolled into the company's broader Yorkshire Live brand, came in sixth with visits up 52% to 5.7m.
The announcement was made by Maksut Shadaev, the head of Russia's Digital Development Ministry, and initially reported by the Russian state-run media outlet TASS. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree on Jan. 29 approving the creation of a joint state-run media outlet. Human Rights Watch’s deputy Asia director Phil Robertson said Hun Sen’s decision to close down VOD was based on the “silliest of rationales”.
This commercial arm of the BBC also owns UKTV.[2] Channel 4 is similarly chartered to the BBC, with a remit to provide public service broadcasting and schools programs, however it runs commercial advertisements to provide a revenue stream. It produces a number of digital channels, branded as Channel 4, as well as More4 and Film4. The New York Times is continuing to gauge the pandemic’s effects on newspapers, magazines and digital media companies through interviews with executives, newsroom employees and union leaders across the country. All told, an estimated 37,000 employees of news media companies in the United States have been laid off, furloughed or had their pay reduced since the arrival of the coronavirus. To ensure that content moderation decisions by very large online platforms do not negatively affect media freedom, MEPs call for the creation of a mechanism to manage content takedown orders. According to MEPs, platforms should first process declarations to distinguish independent media from non-independent sources.
Media should then be notified of the platform’s intention to delete or restrict their content alongside a 24-hour window for the media to respond. If after this period the platform still considers the media content fails to comply with its terms and conditions, they can proceed with deleting, restricting or referring the case to national regulators to take the final decision without delay. However, if the media provider considers that the platform’s decision does not have sufficient grounds and undermines media freedom, they have right to bring the case to an out-of-court dispute settlement body.
We also measure the explanatory power of each individual dimension on the media coverage. For this, we calculate the Kendall-Tau (KT) correlation of the corresponding feature against the number of followers per commune for each news outlet. The results of these measurements should give information on the marketing strategy of different outlets. According to the PM and PS models, direct targeting of specific sectors of the population shape the distribution of news.
The BBC and Mail Online also ranked first and second for page views, with the BBC reaching 3.4 billion page views and Mail Online 559.9 million. The broadcaster had lost its top ranking to Money Saving Expert for one month exceptionally in August, but as of September has regained its top ten ranking. The BBC and Mail Online also ranked first and second for page views, with the BBC reaching 3.1 billion page views and Mail Online 517.2 million. This is combined with data from participating websites that are tagged so all devices visiting the site can be identified and logged. Ipsos iris data is partly derived from a panel of 10,000 people aged 15 and over that is designed to be nationally representative. The participants have meters installed across 25,000 personal devices to passively measure website and app usage.
To validate the results and ensure that they are peculiar to the online media ecosystem and not an artifact of the social media attention dynamics as a whole, we repeat the same experiment using a different topical dataset. In particular, we gather data on the Twitter followers for the soccer players that were part of the Chilean national footballFootnote 7 team in the “Copa America Centenario 2016” tournament. We expect the coverage variable in a sport-celebrity fans scenario to be influenced by different aspects and, consequently, the link to the investigated features being weaker. Finally, for the political feature, we use the right/left-leaning of the commune (see Sect. 3). To calculate the political factor per commune, we first aggregated the raw number of votes receives by each party on each commune in the past three elections (i.e., 2013, 2009, 2005).
Out of the valid users, only 2041 had a GPS set of coordinates, and 381,166 did explicit reference to a commune. This gave us a total of 383,207 unique followers that we were able to assign with high confidence to one of the 346 communes in Chile. This is comparable with the 602,810 users that we will use as our sample of followers of the news outlets. We use a regression model to study the influence of geographic, socioeconomic and political characteristics of the communes that may attract profit-driven media coverage. We try to predict the ranking of communes for each outlet based on the number of followers from each commune.
If motivated by a profit-driven model of the media system, this targeting may be based in socioeconomic and/or political characteristics of the intended audience, instead of only geography. According to the Gravity Model, we predict the flow of information in the news media system in terms of geography, and hence, indirectly, the proportional distribution of followers a target area will have for a given news outlet. Among consistent liberals, the radio programs of Rush Limbaugh (75% distrust), Glenn Beck (59%) and Sean Hannity (54%) round out the list of those distrusted by majorities. When it comes to getting news about government and politics, there are stark ideological differences in the sources that online Americans use, as well as in their awareness of and trust in those sources.
Placement in these business outlets can drive awareness, interest, and engagement across a company’s key audiences. The resonant stories range from profiles of up-and-coming brands, Q&As with CEOs, and features on new product launches to thoughtful columns on innovation and leadership. For B2B companies especially, coverage in these tier-one business outlets lends immense credibility. While earning coverage in top-tier news media outlets may be your initial aspiration, it may not be where your company would see the most benefit.
Not only traditional Mass Media (television stations, radio stations, newspapers), but even the Internet and social platforms are influenced by business. A repressive 2021 Law on Protection from False Information was used to further restrict media outlets. This work presents a method to characterize the news outlets in the media system based on the geographic, socioeconomic and political profile of their audiences.
There are two alternative definitions of “audience” when using the Twitter’s Application Programming Interface (API) that are based on Followers or Retweeters.Footnote 2 We think both approaches have pros and cons. For example, adopting Retweeters is perhaps a “stronger” definition since there is an overt behavior of “endorsement” of the media by the action of retweeting. However, this would characterize only the active portion of an outlet audience. Using Followers instead would provide a “weaker” characterization since we are not entirely sure all followers do read the tweets of their subscriptions. Moreover, the stronger definition would have the effect to not consider the behavior of passive users since is something we cannot capture using the regular Twitter API. We decided to be less restrictive and rely on the weaker definition, as we think it better represents the general audience.
Five of them are national outlets — representing various social and political leanings from the right to the left — namely Sözcü, Cumhuriyet, T24, Duvar, and Teyit. Yeni Şafak has been the leader among Group B outlets in social media engagement throughout the year, excluding three weeks that NTV passed it and one week that Haber 7 did so. Still, none of the pro-government Group B outlets can reach the level of social media engagement of Group A’s leading outlet Sözcü. Turkey’s online population stood at 58,546,876 real users in October 2020, according to the Gemius data. Alongside Google, Facebook, YouTube and e-governance services, the Top 20 list of the most visited websites in Turkey regularly features an average of five news organizations. In order to understand what casual readers were “incidentally exposed”19 to by Google-curated news stories, we also looked into the trending queries.
The website and apps of the tabloid reached 2.9 million people - a 54% increase compared to March. It was followed by the Huffpost (audience of 3.7m, up 11%) which was the only other newsbrand to see double-digit growth in April. Metro and The Independent saw the biggest month-on-month growth in June of the UK’s ten largest newsbrands by audience size. The New York Times, while ranking 26th for reach, came tenth for engagement having seen a huge year-on-year increase in time spent with the brand’s digital properties (212 million minutes, up 804% year-on-year). The site saw a boost in its popularity after its acquisition of Wordle last spring. The BBC again commanded the largest audience during the month, reaching 76% of the UK online population aged over 15 (38.1 million people), followed by The Sun (26.3 million, 53% reach), the Mirror (51% reach) and Mail Online (24.3 million, 49%).
Elsewhere, its website, the People’s Daily Online, is the most prominent news website in the country. Based in New York, with a firm focus on fashion, style, and culture, it showcases the latest trends in clothing, offering style and grooming advice to its devoted audience. It also features interviews with television, film, and sports stars and stories surrounding mental health and nutrition. It has capitalized on the recent trend of men being able to be style and fashion icons. Still, it has received criticism for accepting payments from organizations and people to write up positive coverage about them. India’s most widely circulated English daily newspaper has a daily circulation of over 2.5 million copies, laying claim to being the most widely read English-language paper in the world.
The BBC was as usual the leading site by far for number of visits in December (669.1m). In https://www.google.com.ag/url?q=https://click4r.com/posts/g/14530923/ , and the only other site to break 100m UK visits in the month, was theguardian.com (125.1m visits) while the Express site came in fourth place with 85.1m visits last month. Overall, UK news consumers spent most time with the BBC (7.8bn minutes), followed by Mail Online (1.9bn minutes) and The Guardian (799.7m minutes). Huffpost (4.4 million people, up 29%) and Samsung’s news aggregator Upday (3.9 million people, up 27%) also saw growth of more than 20% compared to June. The UK broadcaster was one of six top ten brands to grow its audience in July. It was followed by The Telegraph (audience of 16.7 million, up 8%), Daily Express (audience of 17 million, up 5%) and Manchester Evening News (audience of 16 million, up 3%).
The Sun has historically been in second place behind the BBC, although Mail Online was also ahead of the News UK brand in May, June, August and September. The remainder of the top ten biggest newsbrands by number of visits saw audiences fall year-on-year. The Sun saw the largest fall (audience of 23.5 million, down 17% year-on-year), followed by ITV (14.9 million, down 16%), the Metro (14.4 million, down 14%) and the Mirror (22 million, down 14%).
The publication has faced numerous challenges, including experimenting with different revenue streams - with less than mixed results. Its subscription model fell flat, and it has since gone back to the advertising model. In 2018, it launched a beta program allowing customers to opt out of advertising. The outlet has been criticized for bias and the level of trustworthiness of its news, with critics pointing to its publishing of several untrue stories. It has also faced accusations of plagiarism, and some of its hiring practices also faced scrutiny.
We think this is due to the fact that this alternative experiment is instead predicting the percentage of the population in the commune that follows the news outlets. This may exacerbate some bias in the selected sample (e.g., certain socioeconomic level of the Twitter users). The alternative target variable presents an interesting hypothesis that we would like to explore in future work. Political bias is probably the most studied type of bias in the mass media [12,13,14,15].
‘In recent years, the Hun Sen regime has revoked licences of critical news outlets, purged newsrooms and targeted journalists, leaving the independent media sector devastated’, says Benedict. He adds that Cambodians are forced therefore to consume news from more pro-government outlets. CCIM updated the story and wrote a letter to the cabinet expressing ‘regret’, while clarifying that the quote used in the story had come from a government spokesman. Deeming the outlet’s response ‘unacceptable’, Hun Sen urged foreign donors to rescind VOD funding and told employees to find work elsewhere. Birmingham Live (11m people, 22% reach) and Liverpool Echo (10.8m people, 22% reach) were two other local newsbrands that made the top half of the UK ranking, given their large reach outside of their immediate local areas. March’s audience growth for Manchester Evening News, consistently the best-ranked regional newsbrand, saw it move up the table.

While areas farther from the city center and mostly rural show the opposite tendency (see Fig. 1(d)). To build it, we used Poderopedia’s “influence” database [29] and Wikepedia [30] as our baseline, manually adding other news outlets in Chile. We enriched the profile of each outlet by adding relevant information such as geographic location (see Sect. 4.2), scope, Twitter account, and number of Twitter followers. For example, consistent conservatives not only trust Fox News at high rates, but also coalesce around it as a source. Fully 84% of consistent conservatives got news about government and politics from Fox News in the past week.
Media outlets want their audience to become loyal followers/listeners/readers. It is essential for news outlets to understand their audience and establish relationships with contacts, news sources, and top journalists to have quality breaking news and reliable press releases. Our primary task in this work is to approximate the distribution of the audience of the online media based on the geopolitical and socioeconomic characteristics of an area. Multiple aspects of a given population can become factors in the news outlets’ audience-targeting strategy. To better understand the media coverage, we first study how this is correlated to geographic elements as predicted by the Gravity Model. For this study, we manually located each news outlets in its source commune.
It now features breaking tech and fintech news, and with over 4 million new website hits a month, it is well and truly in the mainstream. One of the most influential and prominent newspapers in the United States is The Boston Globe, a daily newspaper published in the city. Founded in 1872, the Globe grew slowly at first, reaching a circulation of about 8,000 in 1877, when Charles H. Taylor purchased it.
Just as a comparison, we repeat the analysis, this time filtering the dataset to keep only the top 25 “newspapers” in Santiago—i.e., excluding radio station, TV channels, etc. (see Fig. 7). Here, for example, it is easy to distinguish newspapers with a local scope, such as portaldemeli or betazeta. For those, the influence of the geographic factor is higher than that of the economic and even the political features. Actually, in the case of portaldemeli (a small commune’s local digital newspaper), the economic factor is almost non-existing. We download the Twitter’s profile of 6,568,769 unique users that follow at least one of the 21 players for which we were able to find an official Twitter account.
The BBC operates several television channels nationally and internationally. The main two in the UK are BBC One and BBC Two, where each English region, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have variations of the channel (excluding BBC Two in Scotland where it is BBC Scotland). The BBC has ten radio stations serving the whole of the UK, a further seven stations in the "national regions" (Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland), and 39 other local stations serving defined areas of England. The station broadcasts the BBC Proms concerts, live and in full, each summer in addition to performances by the BBC Orchestras and Singers.
