Eighteen caregivers and participants with WSS completed the parent- and self-report versions of the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorder or the adapted version of the Screen for Adult Anxiety Related Disorder. Approximately 33.33% of parents and 65% of participants with WSS rated in the clinical range for overall anxiety. Across anxiety subtypes, parents primarily indicated concerns with Separation Anxiety (72%), which was also endorsed by the majority of participants with WSS (82%). The emergent trend showed Total Anxiety increased with age based on parent-informant ratings. The behavioral phenotype of WSS includes elevated anxiety. Timely referral to services for children born with birth defects can improve health outcomes. Birth defects surveillance registries may be a valuable data source for connecting children to health and social service programs.
Population-based, state-wide data from the Texas Birth Defects Registry (TBDR) at the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) were used to connect children 9-18 months old, born with select birth defects with DSHS social workers. The social workers reviewed developmental milestones and referred children and their families to various health and social service programs. We tabulated the proportions of children meeting milestones and referral characteristics by referral program type and type of birth defect.
Social workers reached 67% (909/1,362) of identified families. Over half of children (54%, 488/909) were not meeting the developmental milestones for their age. Social workers provided over 3,000 program referrals, including referring 21% (194/909) of children to Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) and 28% (257/909) to case management.
Our results illustrate a method of leveraging a birth defects surveillance system for referral services. Given the large number of referrals made, our findings suggest that birth defects registries can be a valuable source of data for referring children to programs.

Astroglial gap junction coupled networks play an important role in regulating neuronal activity and loss of interastrocytic coupling causally contributes to TLE. Here, we show in the unilateral intracortical kainate (KA) mouse model of TLE that reactive microglia are primary producers of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)α and contribute to astrocyte dysfunction and severity of status epilepticus (SE). Immunohistochemical analyses revealed pronounced and persistent microglia reactivity, which already started 4 h after KA-induced SE. Partial depletion of microglia using a colony stimulating factor 1 receptor inhibitor prevented early astrocyte uncoupling and attenuated the severity of SE, but increased the mortality of epileptic mice following surgery. Using microglia-specific inducible TNFα knockout mice we identified microglia as the major source of TNFα during early epileptogenesis. Importantly, microglia-specific TNFα knockout prevented SE-induced gap junction uncoupling in astrocytes. Continuous telemetric EEG recordings revealed that during the first 4 weeks after SE induction, microglial TNFα did not significantly contribute to spontaneous generalized seizure activity. Moreover, the absence of microglial TNFα did not affect the development of hippocampal sclerosis but attenuated gliosis. Taken together, these data implicate reactive microglia in astrocyte dysfunction and network hyperexcitability after an epileptogenic insult.
This study investigated the association and dose-response relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and depressive symptoms in late life and explored the mediating roles of inflammatory markers in the ACEs-depressive symptom association among Chinese older adults.
This study was conducted using 2014 life history survey data and 2015 follow-up data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Data on ACEs and depression, inflammatory markers of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell were collected. The association between ACEs and depressive symptoms was examined using logistic regression, and the mediation effects of inflammatory markers were evaluated.
A total of 6518 individuals over 60 years were included in the analysis. Compared to no ACE exposure, the adjusted odd ratios (OR) ranged from 1.377 (95% CI, 1.133-1.673) when participants had been exposed to two ACEs to 1.809 (95% CI, 1.451-2.256) when participants were exposed to four or more ACEs. A significant dose-response relationship between cumulative ACE scores and depression was observed. Six of the 12 ACE exposures were related to increased odds of depressive symptoms. CRP appeared to partially mediate the ACE-depressive symptom association, and the proportion of the effect of ACEs on depression was 1.17% (P = 0.008).

Despite the tremendous clinical implications, we cannot predict whether a minimally verbal child is simply delayed (but will eventually develop spoken language) or will continue to struggle with verbal language, and might therefore benefit from learning an alternative form of communication. This is important for clinicians to know, to be able to choose the most helpful interventions, such as alternative forms of communication. In addition, the field lacks a standard definition of "minimally verbal." Even when we do agree on what the term means (e.g. fewer than 20 words), describing a child based on their lack of words does not tell us whether that child is communicating in other ways or how they are using those 20 words. To address these concerns, we developed the Low Verbal Investigatory Survey (LVIS), a one-page parent-report measure designed to help us characterize how minimally verbal autistic children are communicating. Parents of 147 children (aged 1-8 years) completed the LVIS. Here, we ask (1) whether the survey measures what it was designed to measure, that is, communicative ability in children without much spoken language, and (2) how the LVIS relates to cognitive and language ability, and symptoms of autism. Results suggest that this survey, which takes only 5 min to complete, is a good estimate of the child's communication skills. Furthermore, LVIS survey scores are correlated with other measures of language and cognitive abilities as well as autism symptomatology. The LVIS has the potential to save time and money in both clinical and research efforts to assess communication skills in minimally verbal autistic children.
The aim of this study was to explore healthcare managers' perceptions about older nurses' and midwives' and their contribution to the workplace.
A qualitative descriptive methodology.
Twenty healthcare managers working in Australia participated in semi-structured interviews. Data were collected between April 2019 and April 2021. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and then analysed using thematic analysis.
All healthcare managers said older nurses and midwives contributed to the workplace through their experience and knowledge. Managers viewed them as a different type of worker and while there were some positive aspects to this, it was mostly negative. Although managers identified a broad age range for the older nurses or midwives, there was a common perception that if they were no longer able to perform their duties, they should leave the workforce.

However, the gene regulatory network triggered by RA signaling remains poorly addressed. Also, whether RA signals control histone modifiers such as the Polycomb group proteins during pancreatic specification remains to be explored. Here, we assess the role of RA on pancreas-specific genes during the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). We demonstrate that RA helps cells exit the definitive endoderm stage and proceed toward a pancreatic fate. Inhibition of the RA pathway using the pharmacological inhibitor LE135 impairs the induction of pancreatic endoderm (PE) markers FOXA2, HNF4α, HNF1β, HHEX, and PDX1. We further determine that RA signals alter the expression of epigenetic-associated genes BMI1 and RING1B in the hESC-derived pancreatic progenitors. These findings broaden our understanding of the mechanisms that drive early PE specification.
