of the rivers. Thus, the study highlighted that the urban settlements and agricultural lands have a considerable influence on river quality thereby triggering the increase in trace element concentrations. Therefore, the study necessitates on the continuous monitoring of river along with adoption of stringent discharge protocols.
Folate may be involved in the detoxification of heavy metals. This has been demonstrated in animal studies, in in vivo and in vitro studies, and clinical evaluations. However, knowledge regarding the associations between serum folate and blood concentrations of cadmium and lead is limited.
We aimed to investigate the relationship between serum folate levels and blood concentrations of cadmium and lead in US adults.
Data on 15,501 adults were obtained from the 1999-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and used for the analysis. Information on serum folate concentrations and blood levels of lead and cadmium was derived from laboratory measurements in the NHANES. Multivariable linear regression was used to examine the relationship between serum folate levels and blood concentrations of cadmium and lead in US adults, controlling for confounders.
The serum folate concentration was negatively correlated with blood levels of cadmium and lead (P-trends <0.01). When stratified by sex (male and female) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR ≤60 and >60 mL/min/1.73 m
), the association between serum folate concentrations and blood levels of cadmium and lead was found to be more stable in adults with eGFR > 60 mL/min/1.73 m
, both in males and females.
These findings warrant future studies to explore the mechanisms responsible for the beneficial role of folate in regulating cadmium and lead concentrations in the blood.

Here, we monitored the impact of sawdust on N2O emissions during pig manure composting. The results suggested that adding sawdust to the compost improved the compost temperature and reduced N2O emissions. The addition of sawdust significantly altered the bacterial community structure and enhanced community turnover during the composting process. The addition of sawdust significantly reduced the relative abundance of denitrification and ureolysis, while increasing the relative abundance of nitrogen fixation. Specifically, adding sawdust may reduce N2O emissions by reducing the relative abundance of Salinithrix, Truepera, Azomonas, Iamia, Silanimonas, Phycisphaera, and Gp21 during the thermophilic and mature phases of the composting period. The possibility of employing FeOOH nano-ellipsoids as a novel shape nano-based iron supplement was investigated. Ferrous sulfate and nano-ellipsoids were daily administered by gavage at low and high dosages. After 1 month of treatment, the hematologic parameters along with serum and organs' iron contents were measured. Liver enzymes, total serum bilirubin, and LDH level were assayed to evaluate any possible toxicity. More investigation was also performed by organ index calculation and also pathologic studies. It was found that nano-ellipsoids are an effective iron supplement to improve iron-related blood parameters. Interestingly, low-dose nano-ellipsoids were even more effective than high-dose ferrous sulfate. Nano-ellipsoids had no considerable impact on the liver enzymes and serum bilirubin. Meanwhile, high-dose ferrous sulfate significantly increases liver enzyme activity. The increased serum LDH was also the only concern in the groups that were treated with high-dose ferrous sulfate and nano-ellipsoids. Pathologic evaluations revealed some signs of liver inflammation after supplementation with high dose nano-ellipsoids and also ferrous sulfate. Overall, these data indicate FeOOH nano-ellipsoids as a novel shape iron supplement to be employed at low dosage but with greater beneficial effects than high-dose ferrous sulfate.Estrogen exerts essential role in liver metabolism, and its deficiency is frequently accompanied by a series of metabolic disorder diseases. To investigate the role of estrogen deficiency in fluorine ions (F-) induced liver injury, the ovariectomy (OVX) rat models were performed by surgically removing the ovaries, and the rats from OVX and non-OVX models were exposed to differential dose of F- (0, 25, 50 and 100 mg/L) in drinking water for 90 days. The liver morphological structure was evaluated by hematoxylin-eosin staining. Proliferation ability of hepatocytes was evaluated by 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU) assay. And distribution of lipid droplets in liver tissue was observed via oil red O staining. In addition, the liver function and lipid metabolism parameters in serum were detected by commercial kits. Results showed that F- induced hepatocytes morphological damage and inhibited the proliferation ability of hepatocytes; estrogen deficiency exacerbated these changes. The deposition of lipid droplets in the liver tissue was multiplicative with increased F- dose, especially after estrogen deficiency. In addition, F- exposure increased (P  less then  0.05 or P  less then  0.01) serum aminotransferase (ALT), aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GT) activities and total bilirubin (T-bil) level; meanwhile, serum triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol (TC) levels were also elevated (P  less then  0.05 or P  less then  0.01). F--induced liver function and lipid metabolism indexes were further increased (P  less then  0.05 or P  less then  0.01) in the state of estrogen deficiency. In conclusion, estrogen deficiency aggravated F--induced liver damage and lipid metabolism disorder.
Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is the most common bariatric procedure worldwide. Obstructive symptoms, together with leaks, are among the most serious postoperative complications. selleck kinase inhibitor This study aimed to investigate the incidence of symptomatic obstruction after SG in Sweden and to explore risk factors, treatment strategies, and outcome.
A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry (SOReg) of patients undergoing SG and developed obstruction symptoms within the first postoperative year was performed. For patients who had undergone any re-intervention, such as endoscopic dilatation or remedial surgery, medical charts were reviewed.
From 2007 to 2018, a total of 9,726 SG were performed, and 59 (0.6%) of them developed postoperative obstruction. Intolerance of solid food was the most common symptom associated with obstruction (80%). Sixty-one percent of the patients had obstruction at the level of incisura angularis. Longer operative time, higher rate of perio conversion to RYGB frequently alleviates symptoms, but despite treatment, almost 50% reported residual symptoms.
Energy and fatigue are thought to improve after bariatric surgery. Such improvements could be related to weight loss and/or increased engagement in day-to-day health behaviors, such as moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). This study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to evaluate several aspects of energy/fatigue in real-time in patients' natural environment during the first year after surgery and assessed the associations of percent total weight loss (%TWL) and daily MVPA with daily energy/fatigue levels.
Patients (n = 71) undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy rated their energy, alertness and attentiveness (averaged to create an "attentiveness" rating), and tiredness and sleepiness (averaged to create a "fatigue" rating) via smartphone-based EMA at 4 semi-random times daily for 10days at pre-surgery and 3-, 6-, and 12months post-surgery. Daily MVPA minutes were assessed via accelerometry. Weight was measured in clinic.
Energy ratings initially increased from pre- tgy expenditure in the context of bariatric surgery.Secale sylvestre is a wild species of rye, morphologically distinct from domestic species. To draw comparisons between species based on molecular features, it is important to have high-quality sequences, especially in the case of organellar genomes. For such reason, the complete chloroplast genome of Secale sylvestre Host introd. no. 6047 will provide useful data for ecological, agricultural, and phylogenetic purposes. Here we present the complete, annotated chloroplast genome sequence of Secale sylvestre Host introd. no. 6047. The genome is 137116 base pair (bp) long. It is the first complete chloroplast genome that can be used as a reference genome for further analysis. The genome can be accessed on GenBank with the accession number (MW557517).
A customized myopic refractive surgery was simulated by establishing a finite element model of the human eye, after which we studied the wave front aberrations induced by biomechanical effects and ablation profile after wave front-guided LASIK surgery.
Thirty myopia patients (i.e., 60 eyes) without other eye diseases were selected. Their ages, preoperative spherical equivalent, astigmatism, and wave front aberration were then obtained, in addition to the mean spherical equivalent error range - 4 to - 8D. Afterward, wave front-guided customized LASIK surgery was simulated by establishing a finite element eye model, followed by the analysis of the wave front aberrations induced by the surface displacement from corneal biomechanical effects, as well as customized ablation profile. Finally, the preoperative and induced aberrations were statistically analyzed.
Comatic aberrations were the main wave front abnormality induced by biomechanical effects, and the wave front aberrations induced by the ablation proffile had significant effects on postoperative wave front aberrations after customized LASIK refractive surgery; however, the effects of the ablation profile were more notorious. Additionally, the characteristics of biomechanical materials have influence on the clinical correction effect.
To evaluate the spatial relationship between macular superficial vessel density (SVD) and macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness in primary angle closure glaucoma(PACG), and to investigate diagnostic abilities of macular SVD and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) parameters.
This was a cross-sectional study on 38 PACG patients (38 eyes) and 25 healthy subjects (25 eyes). Macular region was imaged using a 1050-nm-wavelength swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography (OCTA) system (DRI OCT Triton, TOPCON). Vessel density of the macular region was quantified by ImageJ software. The peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thicknesses and macular GCIPL thickness were obtained by swept-source OCT. Pearson correlation analysis was used to evaluate the spatial positional relationship between macular SVD and macular GCIPL thickness. At the same time, the correlation between macular SVD and pRNFL thickness was evaluated. Areas under the receiver operating characteristics curves (AUCs) of OCT, OCTA and FAZ measurement metrics were calculated to assess the diagnostic ability for glaucoma.
