After the European Headache Federation (EHF) Congress, renowned Spanish neurologists specialised in migraine presented the most significant latest developments in research in this field at the Post-EHF Meeting.
The main data presented concerning the treatment of chronic and episodic migraine were addressed, with attention paid more specifically to those related to preventive treatments and real-life experience in the management of the disease. An important review was carried out of the new therapeutic targets and the possibilities they offer in terms of understanding the pathophysiology of migraine and its treatment. An update was also presented of the latest developments in the treatment of migraine with fremanezumab, a monoclonal antibody recently authorised by the European Medicines Agency. Participants were also given an update on the latest developments in basic research on the pathology, as well as an overview of the symptoms of migraine and COVID-19. Finally, the repercussions of migraine in terms of its burden on the care and economic resources of the health system were addressed, along with its impact on society.

A new algorithm is presented to virtually reconstruct realistic bone nanostructures, consisting of collagen fibrils embedded in a hydroxyapatite mineral network. This algorithm takes into account potential misalignments between fibrils, as well the porous structure of the mineral phase. A parallel non-iterative mesh generation algorithm is utilized to create high-fidelity FE models for several representative volume elements (RVEs) of the bone with various fibrils volume fractions and misalignments. The piezoelectric response of each RVE is simulated under three types of loading the longitudinal compression, lateral compression, and shear. The resulting homogenized stress and electric field in RVEs with aligned fibrils showed a linear variation with the fibrils volume fraction under all loading conditions. For RVEs with misaligned fibrils, although more oscillations were observed in homogenized results, their difference with the results of RVEs with aligned fibrils subject to lateral compression and shear loadings were negligible. However, under longitudinal compression, the electric field associated with RVEs with misaligned fibrils was notably higher than that of RVEs with aligned fibrils for the same volume fraction.Globally, HIV affects women disproportionally to men, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. While the monthly dapivirine vaginal ring (VR) is a promising female-initiated HIV prevention method, it is important to understand how well the ring is liked. With former participants of HOPE, an open-label extension trial of the ring, we used emoji stickers and a worksheet to explore female end-user's acceptability of and opinions about the VR. We aimed to understand these participants' opinions about the VR, and how they had changed over time, particularly in the context of known efficacy of the dapivirine VR. Most participants easily understood the exercise and how to use the emoji stickers, with a few exceptions. For those who had trouble understanding how to use the emoji, interviewer support and encouragement helped them to understand and continue with the exercise. Emoji interpretation varied widely with participants using the same emoji to express divergent opinions. Using the emoji stickers, participants expressed mostly positive opinions of the vaginal ring for HIV prevention, with some lingering concerns about the product's partial effectiveness. This paper contributes to the literature supporting the assertion that the dapivirine VR for HIV prevention is acceptable to women, and that acceptability increases with time and proper education. This analysis also provides evidence that emoji visual tools can enhance understanding of acceptability of an intervention when used in qualitative research.
Cerebrospinal fluid shunts in the treatment of hydrocephalus, although associated with clinical benefit, have a high failure rate with repeat computed tomography (CT) imaging resulting in a substantial cumulative radiation dose. Therefore, we sought to develop a whole-body ultralow-dose (ULD) CT protocol for the investigation of shunt malfunction and compare it with the reference standard, plain radiographic shunt series (PRSS).
Following ethical approval, using an anthropomorphic phantom and a human cadaveric ventriculoperitoneal shunt model, a whole-body ULD-CT protocol incorporating two iterative reconstruction (IR) algorithms, pure IR and hybrid IR, including 60% filtered back projection and 40% IR was evaluated in 18 adult patients post new shunt implantation or where shunt malfunction was suspected. Effective dose (ED) and image quality were analysed.
ULD-CT permitted a 36% radiation dose reduction (median ED 0.16 mSv, range 0.07-0.17, versus 0.25 mSv (0.06-1.69 mSv) for PRSS (p = 0.002). Shunt visualisation in the thoracoabdominal cavities was improved with ULD-CT with pure IR (p = 0.004 and p = 0.031, respectively) and, in contrast to PRSS, permitted visualisation of the entire shunt course (p < 0.001), the distal shunt entry point and location of the shunt tip in all cases. For shunt complications, ULD-CT had a perfect specificity. find more False positives (3/22, 13.6%) were observed with PRSS.

Osseointegration at the titanium surface-bone interface is one of the key factors affecting the success rate of dental implants. However, the titanium surface always forms a passive oxide layer and impacts bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) osteogenic differentiation after exposure to the atmosphere, which further leads to poor osseointegration. Given that wet storage helps prevent titanium aging and that weakly alkaline conditions stimulate BMSC osteogenic differentiation, the aim of the present study was to explore whether sodium bicarbonate, a well-known hydrogen ion (pH) buffer, forms an alkaline microenvironment on titanium surfaces to promote BMSC osteogenic differentiation.
In this work, sand-blasted and acid-etched (SLA) titanium discs were soaked in 20 mM, 50 mM, 100 mM, and 200 mM sodium bicarbonate at room temperature for 5 min without rinsing. The influence of this surface modification on BMSC adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation was measured. Additionally, cellular osteogenic differentiation-associated signaling pathways were evaluated.
