Microscopic anatomical study of the hand requires difficult or destructive dissection techniques for each anatomical structure. Synchrotron phase-contrast imaging (sPCI) allows us to study precisely, at a microscopic resolution and in a nondestructive approach, the soft tissues and bone structures within a single 3D image. Therefore, we aimed to assess the capacity of sPCI to study the arterial anatomy of the hand and digits in human cadavers for anatomical purposes. A non-injected hand from an embalmed body was imaged using sPCI at 21-µm pixel size. The vascularization and innervation of the hands were virtually reconstructed at 84-µm resolution, and the medial neurovascular bundle of the third digit at 21 µm. The thinner-most distal structures were observed and reported. The diameter and thickness of the vascular and neural structures were defined on 2D computed tomographic axial projections, and using a granulometry method coupled to the 3D reconstructions. The vascularization of the hand was visible from the radial and ulnar arteries to the distal digital transverse anastomoses. The thinnest structure observed was the anastomotic arterial network around the proper palmar digital nerve. The perineural arterioles individualizable at this resolution had a diameter of 66-309 µm. In conclusion, sPCI allows both the arterial and neural anatomy of the hand to be studied at the same time, as well as the anatomical interactions between both networks. However, the combined use of PP and BM-MSCs in clinical studies has reported mixed results. Understanding the cellular and molecular interactions between PP and BM-MSCs plays the important role of guiding future research and clinical application. This systematic review investigates the effects of PP on the biophysiological functions of BM-MSCs in in vitro human studies, including (i) proliferation, (ii) migration, (iii) differentiation, (iv) growth factor/cytokine/protein expression, (v) immunomodulation, (vi) chemotactic effect on haematopoietic stem cells, (vii) response to apoptotic stress, and (viii) gene expression. In vitro studies in human have demonstrated the multi-faceted 'priming effect' of PP on the biophysiological functions of BM-MSCs. PP has been shown to improve proliferation, migration, osteogenic differentiation, reaction to apoptotic stress as well as immunomodulatory, pro-angiogenic and pro-inflammatory capacities of BM-MSCs. Several factors are highlighted that restrict the transferability of these findings into clinical practice. Therefore, more collaborative in vitro research in humans modelled to reflect clinical practice is required to better understand the effects of PP exposure on the biophysiological function(s) of BM-MSCs in human.Cerebrotendinous X anthomatosis (CTX) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder presenting with possible psychiatric manifestations that, once established, are difficult to control. Most studies on paediatric pharyngotonsillitis focus on group A streptococci. This study, however, analyses a broad spectrum of bacteria and viruses related to paediatric pharyngotonsillitis and evaluates their associated clinical symptoms and courses.
This observational prospective study in primary healthcare includes 77 children aged < 15 with a sore throat and 34 asymptomatic children, all of whom were sampled from the tonsils with an E-swab
for analysis with culture and PCR for 14 bacteria and 15 viruses. Patients were evaluated clinically, and their symptoms recorded in diaries for 10 days. Participants were followed up for 3 months by reviewing medical records.
A pathogen was detected in 86% of patients and in 71% of controls (P = 0.06). Bacteria were found in 69% of patients and 59% of controls (P = 0.3), and viruses in 36% and 26%, respectively (P = 0.3). Group A streptococci was the most common finding, with a prevalence of 49% and 32%, respectively (P = 0.1). Clinical signs were not useful for distinguishing pathogens. None of the controls and 16% of the patients reconsulted for a sore throat within 3 months.

Associations of newborn TSH with the neurodevelopment and growth of children are inconsistent. The aim of the study was to systematically review the literature on the associations between newborn TSH and childhood neurodevelopment and growth. Databases including PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, WHO, and Iodine Global Network were searched for eligible studies. Seventeen studies were included. Neurodevelopment was assessed using different tools in children aged 1-12 years of age. The associations between newborn TSH and cognitive development were negative in studies from iodine deficient populations, while a null association was found in studies from iodine sufficient populations. A null association between TSH and psychomotor development was observed regardless of iodine status of the study populations. There was no evidence of an association between newborn TSH and child anthropometry, but evidence of negative association was found between newborn TSH and birthweight. Although the associations between newborn TSH and neurodevelopment may differ based on the iodine status of populations, most of the included studies did not adjust for the key confounders and had a small sample size. Quality data-linkage studies that utilize newborn TSH data from newborn screening with adequate adjustment for potential confounders are warranted to better understand the relationship between newborn TSH and neurodevelopment and growth in children. CRD42020152878.Serine can regulate selenoprotein expression, and dietary serine is correlated with the contents of plasma selenoprotein P (Sepp1) and milk selenium (Se) in lactating mothers. Based on this, we investigated the effects of serine supplementation in the diets of late gestating and lactating sows on Sepp1 and Se contents in sows and their offspring. A total of 72 sows were assigned to four groups. During the experiment, sows were fed either a basal diet or basal diets supplemented with three different levels of serine. The results showed that maternal dietary serine had no effect on the Se content in the serum of sows and their offspring, whereas it significantly increased the Se content in the liver of piglets at the age of 21 days. Maternal dietary serine significantly increased Sepp1 content, either in the serum of sows or that in their offspring at the ages of 3 days, 7 days, and 21 days. Additionally, maternal dietary serine significantly increased litter weight and the average body weight of piglets at the age of 11 days. Notably, a positive correlation was found between the average body weight of piglets at the age of 11 days and serum Sepp1 content in piglets, at the age of either 3 days or 7 days. In conclusion, maternal dietary serine supplementation could improve Se nutritional status in sows and their offspring. These beneficial changes may contribute to the higher body weight of the offspring.Blood-brain barrier (BBB), although very important for protection of brain from major neurotoxins, negatively affects the treatment of central nervous system diseases by limiting the passage of neuropharmaceuticals from blood to the brain.
