We investigate whether childhood exposures influence adult chronic inflammation and mortality risk via adult health characteristics and socioeconomic status (SES) and whether gender moderates these relationships. Analyzing a longitudinal national sample of 9,310 men and women over age 50, we found that childhood SES, parental behaviors, and adolescent behaviors were associated with adult chronic inflammation via health characteristics and SES in adulthood. The process of disadvantage initiated by low childhood SES (i.e., adult health risk factors, socioeconomic disadvantage, and chronic inflammation) subsequently raised mortality risk. In addition, gender moderated the mediating influence of childhood SES via unhealthy behaviors and parental behaviors via adult SES. Demonstrating how social forces shape biological health through multiple mechanisms informs health policies by identifying multiple points of intervention in an effort to reduce the lasting consequences of childhood disadvantage.Previous research has demonstrated that men's lower mate value predicts increased perpetration of mate retention, especially with respect to cost inflicting behaviors. It is less clear if lower mate value women, including those who perceive themselves as being less physically attractive than their intrasexual rivals, also perpetrate more mate retention. Moreover, it is presently unclear whether romantic jealousy, which has been proposed to motivate compensatory behavior in response to evidence that a valued mating relationship is threatened, might mediate this link. The present study addressed this gap in knowledge by examining whether women's overall self-perceived mate value and upward physical appearance comparisons predicted their cost inflicting and benefit provisioning mate retention, as well as whether jealousy mediated these relationships. In a sample of 167 heterosexual undergraduate women, results found self-perceived mate value predicted greater benefit provisioning mate retention, but not romantic jealousy. In contrast, jealousy mediated the relationship between women's upward physical appearance comparisons and both their cost-inflicting and benefit-provisioning mate retention, supporting the hypothesis that jealousy in the face of unfavorable social comparisons on important mate value traits can promote action aimed at retaining a mate. This editorial describes recent randomized controlled trials of worksite wellness interventions and argues that fidelity to intervention designs should be contingent on careful consideration of internal and external validity. A China based hypertension management study which achieved impressive outcomes across 60 workplaces using a comprehensive approach is contrasted with the traditional wellness practices employed in other randomized controlled trials conducted in America. Why studies with negative findings receive more media and professional scrutiny than studies with positive findings is discussed. Three reasons are posited for why bad is stronger than good when it comes to capturing attention. Adoption of new evidence is discussed along with what health promotion professionals can do to advance best practices by considering adoption as an ongoing process.Risk perception is a critical determinant for individuals' health behavior change, especially for behaviors with distal future consequences. Building on construal-level theory, this study investigates if and how thinking concretely about the negative consequences of opioid misuse influences people's risk perception toward opioid misuse. Two message cues - images and concrete (vs. PROTAC tubulin-Degrader-1 solubility dmso abstract) language - are proposed to influence concrete thinking and perceived temporal distance, which in turn influence risk perception directly and through negative affect. Using a factorial online experiment with Amazon Mechanical Turk workers (N = 220), this study found that messages using concrete language made people think more concretely about the negative consequences of opioid misuse. Perceived concreteness, in turn, increased risk perception and negative affect. Negative affect also increased risk perception. The use of images decreased perceived temporal distance, which in turn, changed risk perception through its influence on negative affect. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of emodin derived from Polygonum multiflorum on melanin production in B16F1 cells. In this study, emodin did not show antioxidant activity in DPPH radical and reducing power assays. However, it was found that emodin scavenged intracellular H2O2. Emodin increased not only tyrosinase activity but also melanin synthesis in vitro. Moreover, emodin enhanced melanin synthesis by increasing the expression level of tyrosinase (TYR), tyrosine related protein (TRP)-1, TRP-2, MITF and SIRT1 proteins in live cells treated with H2O2 compared with H2O2 treatment group in the analyses of western blot and immunofluorescence. Moreover, emodin suppressed ERK activation by SIRT1 and FOXO1. Thus, emodin promoted melanin synthesis by increasing the expression of TRP-1, TRP-2, tyrosinase through the activation of MITF transcription factor. These findings suggest that emodin could promote melanin production related to anti-hair graying. Two new phenolic glycosides 7R,8R-threo-4,7,9,9'-tetrahydroxy-3-methoxy-8-O-4'-neolignan-3'-O-(3-α-L-arabinofuranosyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside. (1), 4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanone-4-O-(6-β-D-xylosyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), along with two known related analogues 7R,8R-threo-4,7,9,9'-tetrahydroxy-3-methoxy-8-O-4'-neolignan-3'-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), 4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanone-4'-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (4) were obtained from the roots of Sanguisorba officinalis. Combined with acid hydrolysis derivatization, the absolute configurations of these new compounds were elucidated by comprehensive analyses of spectroscopic data including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electrospray ionization high resolution mass (HRESIMS) as well as circular dichroism (CD). Compounds 1-4 exhibited anti-inflammatory properties in vitro by attenuating the production of inflammatory mediators, such as nitric oxide (NO) as well as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6).
