Behavioural avoidance responses of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) to aquatic hypoxia were investigated at 22 and 30°C using a modified shuttlebox system. Fish movement between a control side maintained at normoxia and a hypoxic side with stepwise decreasing water oxygen tension was analysed for entries into the hypoxic side, residence time per entry into the hypoxic side and total time in the hypoxic side. Acclimation to 30°C increased the oxygen threshold for the onset of hypoxia avoidance behaviours for entries and total time, while residence time per entry was unchanged.Microsoft Excel is ubiquitous, cost-effective, and can be used to create publication-quality single-case design graphs. We systematically replicated the GraphPad Prism video tutorial by Mitteer et al. Selleckchem (R,S)-3,5-DHPG (2018) to teach 24 master's students to create multiple-baseline graphs using Excel 2016. Students' mean accuracy on the multiple-baseline graph was 25% in pretraining, 86% with the video tutorial, and 96% with the review checklist. Next, students used the same video tutorial to create multielement and reversal graphs. Students' mean accuracy on the multielement graph was 93% with video tutorial and 94% with review checklist, and accuracy on the reversal graph was 82% with video tutorial and 94% with review checklist. Students reported moderate to high satisfaction with both training components. The results support scientist-practitioners using the video tutorial and review checklists to create three common graphs using Excel 2016, Excel 2019, and Excel Office 365.Despite the potential of cancer medicine, cancer stem cells (CSCs) associated with chemoresistance and disease recurrence are the significant challenges currently opposing the efficacy of available cancer treatment options. Mitochondrial dynamics involving the fission-fusion cycle and mitophagy are the major contributing factors to better adaptation, enabling CSCs to survive and grow better under tumour micro-environment-associated stress. Moreover, mitophagy is balanced with mitochondrial biogenesis to maintain mitochondrial homeostasis in CSCs, which are necessary for the growth and maintenance of CSCs and regulate metabolic switching from glycolysis to oxidative phosphorylation. In this review, we discuss different aspects of mitochondrial dynamics, mitophagy, and mitochondrial homeostasis and their effects on modulating CSCs behaviour during cancer development. Moreover, the efficacy of pharmacological targeting of these cellular processes using anti-CSC drugs in combination with currently available chemotherapeutic drugs improves the patient's survival of aggressive cancer types.
Although previous studies reported the relationship between psoriasis and herpes zoster, the number of study is not sufficient to support the conclusions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between psoriasis and herpes zoster.
The data of a nationally representative Korean cohort collected in the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) System from 2002 to 2013 were used. Psoriasis was defined≥2 International Classification of Diseases 10
revision (ICD-10) L40 codes. Among them, severe psoriasis was defined as psoriatic medication use, including acitretin, systemic corticosteroid, cyclosporine and methotrexate. Other psoriasis was defined as mild psoriasis. Herpes zoster was defined as≥2 ICD-10 B02 codes or ≥1 B02 code with antiviral medication use. Psoriasis patients (n=11009) and control participants (n=44036) were matched 14 by age, sex, income and region of residence. A stratified Cox proportional hazard model was used stratified by age, sex, income and region of residence. Crude and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated for the risk of herpes zoster in the total psoriasis group, mild psoriasis group, and severe psoriasis group and compared with those in each matched control group.
The HR for herpes zoster was higher in the psoriasis group than in control group (adjusted HR=1.22, 95% CI=1.12-1.33, P<0.001). The findings were consistent between the mild psoriasis and severe psoriasis patients and their matched controls, and between male psoriasis patients in all age groups and their matched male controls.

Psoriasis may increase the risk of herpes zoster, especially in males.The impact of Eucheuma on water loss and status in sponge cakes was measured and analyzed in this study. Eucheuma was used to replace 0%, 10%, and 20% of wheat flour to make sponge cakes, coded as the control, EP10, and EP20, respectively. The initial water content of batters showed no significant differences (around 57.0%, dry basis), whereas the final EP10 and EP20 products had higher water content. Three stages were found during baking in control sample and these three stages were fitted by linear, linear, and exponential models with root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.016, 0.018, and 0.133, respectively. link2 Eucheuma addition decreased the water loss rate and changed the water loss stages, which were fitted by linear, linear, and linear models in EP20 sample (RMSE = 0.027, 0.047, and 0.108, respectively). The crust formation and crumb structure analysis showed that the formation of cracks and the disappearance of pore structures hindered the water evaporation. The low-field proton nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging results showed that the water status in the final EP20 products was not as tightly as that in the control samples. A proposed schematic diagram was developed based on the qualitative analysis of the transfer mechanisms to explain the total effect of Eucheuma on the water loss rate and status. These results aid our understanding of the water loss process of sponge cakes and promote the potential application of Eucheuma in bakery products. PRACTICAL APPLICATION Eucheuma as a flour replacement can improve the contents of dietary fiber and minerals like potassium of sponge cake. The impact of Eucheuma on water loss and status in sponge cake was measured and analyzed in this study. The results can promote the potential application of Eucheuma in bakery products and predict the quality attributes of baking products.An artificial anal sphincter is a device to help patients with fecal incontinence rebuild the ability to control the excrement through the anus. In this article, an artificial anal sphincter based on a novel clamping mechanism (AASNCM) is proposed to improve the safety and reliability. The AASNCM, which is powered by a transcutaneous energy transfer system, consists of a novel clamping mechanism, a receiving coil and a control unit. According to design requirements, the novel clamping mechanism model was established. After that, its kinematics and dynamics were analyzed. The results of force tests on the prototype AASNCM show that the maximum values of clamping force and expanding force are 15.859 and 31.029 N, respectively. Comparing the experimental results with theoretical analysis, a good match can be concluded. Finally, in vitro experiments were conducted, and have verified the safety and reliability of the proposed AASNCM.In the analysis of gene expression data, network approaches take a system perspective and have played an irreplaceably important role. Gaussian graphical models (GGMs) have been popular in the network analysis of gene expression data. They investigate the conditional dependence between genes and "transform" the problem of estimating network structures into a sparse estimation of precision matrices. When there is a moderate to large number of genes, the number of parameters to be estimated may overwhelm the limited sample size, leading to unreliable estimation and selection. In this article, we propose incorporating information from previous studies (for example, those deposited at PubMed) to assist estimating the network structure in the present data. It is recognized that such information can be partial, biased, or even wrong. A penalization-based estimation approach is developed, shown to have consistency properties, and realized using an effective computational algorithm. Simulation demonstrates its competitive performance under various information accuracy scenarios. The analysis of TCGA lung cancer prognostic genes leads to network structures different from the alternatives.Population attributable risk (PAR) is becoming more widely used for quantifying preventability of cancer. link3 However, its estimations have had a wide range, leading to questions about the true preventability. Our study aimed to compare the two PAR estimation methods (ie, literature-based method and low-risk method) for colorectal cancer (CRC) in the US population based on the same set of modifiable risk factors physical activity, body mass index, alcoholic drinks, red meat, processed meat, dietary fiber, dietary calcium and cigarette smoking. For the literature-based method, 65% and 53%, and for the low-risk method, 62% and 49% of CRC cases for males and females, respectively, were attributable to the eight dietary and lifestyle risk factors. Additional sensitivity analyses were conducted with respect to the different choices of risk factors, relative risks (RRs) and exposure prevalence estimates used in the literature-based method. The PARs including only the "convincing" factors and excluding "probable" factors defined by the WCRF/AICR were 50% for males and 34% for females. Using RRs derived from different studies changed the PARs considerably (57%-74% for males and 37%-60% for females). Our study assessed the robustness of PAR calculations through a direct comparison between the two methods using different assumptions and data and generally found high concordance. From the additional analyses, we found that the choice of risk factors and RRs could substantially influence the PAR estimates. Given the findings, future studies reporting PAR should consider presenting a range of PAR estimates based on choices of risk factors and RRs.In primates, the retinal ganglion cells contributing to high acuity spatial vision (midget cells and parasol cells), and blue-yellow color vision (small bistratified cells) are well understood. Many other ganglion cell types with large dendritic fields (named wide-field ganglion cells) have been identified, but their spatial density and distribution are largely unknown. Here we took advantage of the recently established molecular diversity of ganglion cells to study wide-field ganglion cell populations in three primate species. We used antibodies against the transcription factor Special AT-rich binding protein 2 (Satb2) to explore its expression in macaque (Macaca fascicularis, M. nemestrina), human and marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) retinas. In all three species, Satb2 cells make up a low proportion (1.5-4%) of the ganglion cell population, with a slight increase from central to peripheral retina. Intracellular dye injections revealed that in macaque and human retinas, the large majority (over 80%) of Satb2 cells are inner and outer stratifying large sparse cells. By contrast, in marmoset retina the majority (over 60%) of Satb2 expressing cells were broad thorny cells, with smaller proportions of recursive bistratified (putative direction-selective), large bistratified, and outer stratifying narrow thorny cells. Our findings imply that Satb2 expression has undergone rapid species specific adaptations during primate evolution, because expression is not conserved across Old World (macaque, human) and New World (marmoset) suborders.
