How to Repair a Bifold Door Top Pivot
The top pivot may become loose and scrape along the floor. This can be corrected by loosening the screw that holds the top bracket.
The top pivot pin is a screw made of metal that is fitted into a plastic cap with a lipped end that stays in the track just above the door. You'll also need a screwdriver, and possibly two pliers.
Remove the bottom pin
Bifold doors can be a great option to make space in your closet, but as time passes, they could begin to slide against the floor, or fall out of the brackets. There are solutions to most issues with a few basic adjustments.
The most common problem is a loose bottom pin or bracket. You can adjust the track by putting the spring-loaded wheel onto the top of the door, and then moving it to the right the desired position. Once the gap has been equalized, tighten the bolt that holds the top pivot bracket in order to keep the door in place.
A typical issue is the edge of the door's bottom scrapes against the carpet. This could be due to the addition of carpet or the flooring material, and it could also be the result of an unbalanced gap between the door and hinge-side jamb. It is possible to fix this by loosening the top guide and sliding it inwards or removing the pivot point at the top and then move it in or out.
The last issue that is common is when the track is misaligned with the door frame, and this can be fixed by loosening the screw on the top of the set and adjusting it in or out as needed. After you've adjusted all the bolts and nuts holding the track in place, you'll be capable of re-sliding it into its track bracket and secure it using the screw.
To remove the bottom pin take both panels at the sides and lift them slightly off the track below and off their brackets. If the bottom bracket has locking levers, unbolt them to free the pin. If the pin doesn't come with a mounting bracket, you can attach a screw with a flat head between the bottom of pivot flange and the door to pull the pin from the door. Once you can get an ensconced grip on the pin, twist it left to right while pulling it out of the door. If you're not able to remove the pin, you may require removing the entire panel from the track system. If this is the situation you could place it on saw horses to make the process easier.
Take off the pin that is on top.
Bifold doors are ideal for reducing space, but they can be troublesome when they begin to slide and scrape against the floor or fall off their tracks. There are a few basic adjustments that can help get them back on the right track.
If the doors slide unevenly you can loosen the screw on the pivot point of the top bracket and then move it around. Close the door and check whether it is aligned with the frame. If it does you can tighten the screw.
Another common issue with internal bifold doors is that the bottoms of the door scrape against the carpet. If this is the case, you can try raising the door's bottom using the bottom pin adjustment. If the door is too high, you'll need remove the doors and trim them with the aid of a saw.
Over time the wood around the pivot and anchor pins may crack. It is possible to apply epoxy to repair the crack and stop it from becoming worse. Apply a small amount of epoxy to the crack and allow it to set before using the door again.
It could be that your bifold doors are too separated. You can fix this by moving the top of the door either up or down on the track.
Doing this by hand can be a challenge, so it's best to have a helper when working on this project. Start by grabbing the outer and inner panels of the door at the sides, then lift them up. Stack them for easier handling.
Release any locking levers on the pivot bracket. Otherwise, grab the top of the pin with a pair of vise grips and twist it from left to right, while pulling it out. Repeat the procedure on the opposite side of the door. Once both pins have been removed, the door should open and align smoothly with the track. If it doesn't, you can always try again. You can use a drill to straighten the track if it's bent.
Reinstall the Bottom Pin
If the bottom pin doesn't function properly, it may cause the door to bind and stop it from opening or closing smoothly. Fortunately, it is usually a simple fix. A loose or missing mounting bolt is often the reason. If this is the case, the best thing to do is to replace the screw with a brand new one that's the same length as the old one. Then, screw it in place and tighten it.
If you're committed to your bifold repair you should use an air pressure gauge to test the top pin that is spring loaded for proper compression. The gauge is also helpful in determining if the pin is cracked or broken it is an important piece of information to have in case you plan to replace it with a new part.
An effective method to determine if the current pivot pin is damaged or worn out is by measuring its diameter and the diameter of the pin cap. Compare the measurements to what you can find online for replacements. This will help you find the correct parts for your door.
Before installing the replacement pivot pin open the doors and then lean them against one other to ensure they're in the right position for installation. If you're using a set of closet door knobs take care to mark a level line down the center of the leading edge of each door. Use a long level to do this so you're sure that the top bifold track is level and in perfect alignment with the jambs.
When the doors are in place Once the doors are in place, insert the top pin into the pivot guide within the track. Swing the door's bottom into place so that the bottom of the pin rests on the L-shaped bracket. If the door isn't fitting correctly between the top guide and the bottom bracket, adjust the height or lowering of the door as required by unscrewing or screwing the pivot that is adjustable on the bottom of the door. Use a long level to mark a plumb-line down the middle of the door frame. If the gap between the side jamb of the hinge and the door isn't even adjustable, adjust the pivot at the bottom.
Reinstall the top pin

They can be found in closets, laundry rooms hallways, bedrooms or even the laundry room. If the gap is too wide You can raise the bottom of the door by loosing and fixing the pivot adjustable at the bottom of the door. This will push the bottom of the door towards the frame, reducing the gap. You can adjust the track hanger's height by loosening the screw at the bottom of the track and adjusting the position with the help of a wrench.
