In the DACPR group, participants practiced DACPR through role-playing of a dispatcher and an emergency caller. Six months after the training, all subjects were asked to perform a 2-min CPR simulation under instructions given by off-duty dispatchers. Results Out of the 66 participants, 59 completed the simulation (30 from the DACPR group and 29 from the Standard group). The CPR quality was similar between the two groups. However, the median time interval between call receipt and the first dispatch-assisted compression was faster in the DACPR group (108 s vs 129 s, p = 0.042). Conclusions This brief DACPR training in addition to standard CPR training can result in a modest improvement in the time to initiate CPR. Future studies are now required to examine the effect of DACPR training on survival of sudden CA.Background Previous renal denervation (RDN) studies showed controversial results in reducing blood pressure. The aim of this study was to provide evidence supporting the effectiveness of laparoscopic-based renal denervation (L-RDN) in treating hypertension. see more Methods Sixteen Beagle dogs were randomly divided into RDN group (n = 12) and sham group (n = 4). Neurogenic hypertension was generated in all dogs via carotid artery route. L-RDN was performed in the RDN group, with sham operation performed as a control. Blood pressure (BP) changes were recorded at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after the procedure. Changes in serum creatinine (sCr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and level of norepinephrine (NE) were analyzed. Histological changes of kidney and renal arteries were also evaluated. Results BP and NE levels were significantly elevated after hypertension induction (p less then 0.01). Systolic and diastolic BP of RDN group were decreased by 15.5 mmHg and 7.3 mmHg (p less then 0.0001 and p = 0.0021, respectively) at the eighth week after L-RDN. Invasive systolic and diastolic BP of RDN group were significantly decreased by 14.5 mmHg and 15.3 mmHg (p less then 0.0001). In contrast, there was no significant decrease in blood pressure in the sham group. In addition, RDN group but not the sham group showed a significant decrease in NE levels (p less then 0.001), while no significant changes in sCr and BUN were observed in both groups. Pathological examinations showed no discernible damage, tear, or dissection to the renal arteries in RND group. Conclusions L-RDN lowered BP and NE levels in hypertensive dogs without affecting renal artery morphology and kidney function.Background As a unique sulfated polysaccharide, fucoidan is an important component of cell wall in brown seaweeds. Its biochemical properties are determined by the positions and quantity of sulfate groups. Sulfotransferases (STs) catalyze the sulfation process, which transfer the sulfuryl groups to carbohydrate backbones and are crucial for fucoidan biosynthesis. Nevertheless, the structures and functions of STs in brown seaweeds are rarely investigated. Results There are a total of 44 ST genes identified from our genome and transcriptome analysis of Saccharina japonica, which were located in the 17 scaffolds and 11 contigs. The S. japonica ST genes have abundant introns and alternative splicing sites, and five tandem duplicated gene clusters were identified. Generally, the ST genes could be classified into five groups (Group I ~ V) based on phylogenetic analysis. Accordingly, the ST proteins, which were encoded by genes within the same group, contained similar conserved motifs. Members of the S. japonica ST gene family show various expression patterns in different tissues and developmental stages. Transcriptional profiles indicate that the transcriptional levels of more than half of the ST genes are higher in kelp basal blades than in distal blades. Except for ST5 and ST28, most ST genes are down-regulated with the kelp development stages. The expression levels of nine ST genes were detected by real-time quantitative PCR, which demonstrates that they responded to low salinity and drought stresses. Conclusions Various characteristics of the STs allow the feasibilities of S. japonica to synthesize fucoidans with different sulfate groups. This enables the kelp the potential to adapt to the costal environments and meet the needs of S. japonica growth.Background Solutions to stochastic Boolean models are usually estimated by Monte Carlo simulations, but as the state space of these models can be enormous, there is an inherent uncertainty about the accuracy of Monte Carlo estimates and whether simulations have reached all attractors. Moreover, these models have timescale parameters (transition rates) that the probability values of stationary solutions depend on in complex ways, raising the necessity of parameter sensitivity analysis. We address these two issues by an exact calculation method for this class of models. Results We show that the stationary probability values of the attractors of stochastic (asynchronous) continuous time Boolean models can be exactly calculated. The calculation does not require Monte Carlo simulations, instead it uses graph theoretical and matrix calculation methods previously applied in the context of chemical kinetics. Even though growth and interaction of C. albicans with certain bacterial species has been studied, little is known about its biofilm growth in vitro in the simultaneous presence of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The aim was to evaluate the growth of C. albicans in polymicrobial biofilms comprising oral Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Further, we also aimed to assess the potential of C. albicans in the Candida-bacteria polymicrobial biofilm to elicit cytokine gene expression and cytokine production from human blood cells. Results C. albicans cell counts increased significantly up to 48 h in polymicrobial biofilms (p less then 0.05), while the bacterial counts in the same biofilms increased only marginally as revealed by qPCR absolute quantification.
