Background and purpose Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is associated with a greater risk of dementia for older adults. However, systematic reviews have shown that some physical exercise (PE) seems to improve MCI symptoms and signs. Those reviews and meta-analysis could not explain what possible moderator influenced their results. This meta-analysis aims to identify the effect of PE over older people's cognition with MCI and explore sources of heterogeneity. Methods Databases were searched from inception January 2020 for randomized clinical trials that evaluated the effects of PE over cognition of older persons with MCI. Random effect meta-analyses were performed for each cognitive outcome. Subgroup analyses and meta-regressions models explored the potential sources of heterogeneity. Results A total of 2077 participants (mean age = 71.8 years) from 27 studies were included. PE improves global cognitive function (SMD = 0.348 [95 % CI 0.166 to 0.529]; p = 0.0001), executive function (SMD = 0.213 [95 % CI 0.026 to 0.400]; p = 0.026) and delayed recall (SMD = 0.180 [95 % CI 0.002 to 0.358]; p = 0.047). A trend towards beneficial effects of PE on verbal fluency (SMD = 0.270 [95 %, CI -0.021 to 0.561]; p = 0.069) and attention (SMD = 0.170 [CI -0.016 to 0.357]; p = 0.073) were also observed. Subgroup analyses showed a relationship between modality and intensity of physical exercise and changes observed in global cognitive function, executive function, delayed recall, verbal fluency and working memory. Discussion and conclusion PE can ameliorate cognitive deficts of older adults with MCI. The most pronounced effects appear to arise from other types of exercise that included mind-body exercises and moderate intensity.The application of livestock and poultry manures was the predominant source of heavy metals in agricultural soils, particularly in China. It is important to systematically compare the pollution characteristics, emission situations and mass loads for heavy metals in the manures of different livestock and poultry in China. According to analysis and estimation based on the reported concentration levels of eight heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg, As, and Ni) and the feed quantities of livestock (pig, cattle, and sheep) and poultry in 2017, the concentrations of Zn and Cu and the over-standard frequencies of Zn, Cu, Cd, and As were much higher than those of other heavy metals, especially in pig manure. In 2017, the total emission of livestock and poultry manure in China was 1.64 × 109 t (FW), which was mainly excreted from cattle (45.77%); while the total emission of heavy metals sourced from manures was 2.86 × 105 t (DW), with the predominant contribution originating from pig manure (71.52%). The highest mass loads of manures and heavy metals were observed in Shandong, Tianjin, Henan, and Shanghai, where heavy metal contamination may be occurring (especially for Zn and Cu). The heavy metal concentrations in livestock and poultry manures of China were similar to other countries; however, more heavy metals were discharged into agricultural land through manure (especially for Zn and Cu). For many countries, abundant Zn and Cu exist in agricultural soils, principally contributed by livestock and poultry manures. These heavy metals originate from their addition to livestock and poultry feeds. Therefore, reducing the addition of Zn and Cu in feeds is an effective measure to lower their input into agricultural soils.We agree with Zheng and colleagues that a statistical measure of heterogeneity is an important consideration in selecting a fixed or random effects model. However, it should not be considered the sole criterion. In meta-analyses that include small numbers of trials, such as ours, results of tests for heterogeneity should be interpreted with caution, as they may be underpowered. A fixed effects model has been advocated when meta-analysing small number of studies (less than five trials), given the concern about inaccurate estimation of between-study variance (1), as the estimation of τ2 (between-study variance), and therefore of μ (estimate of underlying mean effect), is highly imprecise (2).Purpose To determine the effect of voluntary exercise on choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in mice. Methods Age-matched wild-type C57BL/6J mice were housed in cages equipped with or without running wheels. After four weeks of voluntary running or sedentariness, mice were subjected to laser injury to induce CNV. After surgical recovery, mice were placed back in cages with or without exercise wheels for seven days. CNV lesion volumes were measured by confocal microscopy. The effect of wheel running only in the seven days after injury was also evaluated. Macrophage abundance and cytokine expression were quantified. Results In the first study, exercise-trained mice exhibited a 45% reduction in CNV volume compared to sedentary mice. In the replication study, a 32% reduction in CNV volume in exercise-trained mice was observed (P = 0.029). 5-Fluorouracil cell line Combining these two studies, voluntary exercise was found to reduce CNV by 41% (P = 0.0005). Exercise-trained male and female mice had similar CNV volumes (P = 0.99). The daily running distance did not correlate with CNV lesion size. Exercise only after the laser injury without a preconditioning period did not reduce CNV size (P = 0.41). CNV lesions of exercise-trained mice also exhibited significantly lower F4/80+ macrophage staining and Vegfa and Ccl2 mRNA expression. Conclusions These findings provide the first experimental evidence that voluntary exercise improves CNV outcomes. These studies indicate that exercise before laser treatment is required to improve CNV outcomes.A range of cutaneous conditions including chilblain-like lesions have been reported in patients with Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) due to severe acute respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2). Using clinical data and images, the authors of a recent nationwide Spanish survey identified 5 clinical patterns which were associated with different patient demographics, onset (timing), and prognosis.Environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) exist worldwide, and since the 1980s they have increasingly influenced global environmental politics and environmental discourse. We analyze an original dataset of 679 ENGOs participating in global environmental conventions in the mid-2010s, and we apply quantitative content analysis to ENGO mission statements to produce an inductive typology of global environmental discourse. Discourse categories are combined with ENGO attribute data to visualize the political topology of this globally-networked ENGO sector. Our results confirm some common assertions and provide new insights. ENGOs are more diverse than conventionally recognized. Quantitative evidence confirms strong North-South disparities in human and financial resources. Four primary discourses are identified Environmental Management, Climate Politics, Environmental Justice, and Ecological Modernization. We compare our typology to existing literature, where Climate Politics and Environmental Justice are under-appreciated, and we discuss ways to expand on the data and methods of this study.
