Solution Levels of Selected Elements within Patients using Experiment with Thalassemia Major
However, the mechanical transfer process may represent up to 19.0% of the total waste generated by hens of an intermediate laying age. According to the average of all the composting stages, the maximum reduction in solids and C from the hatchery waste was reached when the waste accounted for 50% of the windrow composition. Such conditions resulted in organic fertilizer with the highest N content (2.8%), equivalent to 40.0% more than that in the treatment with no added hatchery waste. The compost resulting from 50% hatchery waste inclusion also had the highest humic acid to fulvic acid (HAFA) ratio and the highest calcium content due to the higher proportion of eggshells. These findings lead to the recommendation for the inclusion of hatchery waste in composting with SM at a 50% rate by mass. Population growth, urbanisation and economic development have led to the increasing generation of municipal solid waste while environmentally sustainable management remains a challenge the world over. This study sought to investigate health effects associated with proximity to waste collection points in Beitbridge Municipality, Zimbabwe. Entinostat mw A cross-sectional study was undertaken to compare the occurrence of disease among the residents living within different distances from the waste collection points (50 m, 100 m, 150 m, 200 m, 250 m, 300 m and above 300 m). A handheld GPS device was used to collect coordinates of the location for the purposes of mapping. The Fishers Exact test and the Multiple Logistic Regression model conducted (on STATA V 13 SE) to determine the association between different variables and the occurrence of health effects. Questionnaires were administered to 700 stratified randomly selected respondents. Five refuse collection points and spatial distribution of health conditions were mapped at Dulibadzimu high-density suburb. The overall response rate was 98% and females constituted the majority of respondents (58%). Most of these respondents were aged between 26 and 35 years of age and were involved in informal trading (35%). Reported health conditions were diarrhoea, dyspnoea, dry cough, eye irritation and asthma. Distance, waste collection point, level of education, nature of occupation and sex were significant contributors to the prevalence of health effects associated with exposure to waste. Exposure to waste is a serious health concern in Beitbridge. Local authority is encouraged to abolish these waste collection points and invest more on conventional waste management systems in partnership with different stakeholders. BACKGROUND In a previous study developed by our group, we identified a phase inversion in 6-sulfatoxymelatonin - melatonin metabolite in urine - daily profile in Fabry's disease patients. Since melatonin is an endogenous marker, it could also be accompanied by behavioral changes in sleep-wake cycle, which impairs the overall patient's life quality. OBJECTIVE In this study, we evaluated sleep-wake cycle in Fabry disease patients. We hypothesized that patients would have increased daytime naps, given our previous results for urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin. PATIENTS/METHODS This was a cross-sectional and case-control study, performed between October 2016 and May 2017. Volunteers recorded activity and rest rhythm by actigraphy and answered Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). From actigraphy data, we calculated sleep parameters sleep latency, wake after sleep onset, sleep (WASO) efficiency, awakenings index (PSQI), and the amount and duration of daytime naps. We included 16 Fabry disease patients with biochemical and molecular diagnosis and 10 control individuals matched by age and gender. RESULTS We did not observe significant differences for any of the parameters analyzed (p > 0.05). However, evaluating the magnitude of the effect, we found that patients dozed, on average, about 42 min longer (d = 0.9 - large effect size) than control group. CONCLUSIONS This is a preliminary study, a proof-of-concept, and our results indicate that changes in melatonin secretion phase may have behavioral consequences in sleep-wake cycle, with longer duration of daytime naps. Osteosarcoma (OS) is a class of cancer originating from the bone, affecting mainly children and young adults. Our previous study showed that MAPK7 gene overexpression was significantly associated with tumor progression, poor treatment response, and worse overall survival, suggesting that MAPK7 could play an important role in OS tumorigenesis. We have investigated if MAPK7 overexpression was a result of any genomic changes in OS tumor specimens. We identified five SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) previously described in databases, dbSNP and COSMIC, and identified two single nucleotide substitution not yet described. We found, in prechemotherapy specimens, a significant association of MAPK7 rs2233072G allele variant with metastasis at diagnosis and relapse (0.0909 and 0.0455, respectively). In post-chemotherapy, rs1054206GG specimen's genotype was associated with osteoblastic histological type (P= 0.0249) and presented decreased MAPK7 gene expression when compared with pre-chemotherapy specimens of same patients (P = 0.0095). Interestingly, it was observed some SNPs genotype exchange after chemotherapy. Our data indicated that MAPK7 gene expression associated with genotype exchange after chemotherapy, and these SNPs associated with important clinical parameters might be a valuable indicator for predicting in OS. OBJECTIVE To quantify neurodegenerative changes along the cervical spinal cord rostral to a spinal cord injury (SCI) by means of quantitative MRI (qMRI) and to determine its relationship with clinical impairment. METHODS Thirty chronic SCI patients (15 tetraplegics and 15 paraplegics) and 23 healthy controls underwent a high-resolution T1-weighted and myelin-sensitive magnetization transfer (MT) MRI. We assessed macro- and microstructural changes along the cervical cord from levels C1 to C4, calculating cross-sectional spinal cord area, its anterior-posterior and left-right width and myelin content (i.e. MT). Regression analysis determined associations between qMRI parameters and clinical impairment. RESULTS In SCI patients, cord area decreased by 2.67 mm2 (p = 0.004) and left-right width decreased by 0.35 mm (p = 0.002) per cervical cord level in the caudal direction when compared to the healthy controls. This gradient of neurodegeneration was greater in tetraplegic than paraplegics in the cross-sectional cervical cord area (by 3.
