Multiple professional bodies and scientific societies have included fertility as an integral part of clinical management. Clinical guidelines advocate that health professionals have the duty to discuss the risk of infertility and fertility preservation options as early as possible and refer to fertility specialists when appropriate. Collectively, fertility decisions are regarded as difficult for both patients and providers. Since providing fertility-related information is vital for better decision making, researchers and policy makers have concentrated their efforts in developing educational tools to aid decisions and guidelines to optimize the delivery of this information, focusing mainly on patients-providers and largely neglecting the role and influence that partners play in this process. Here, we reflect on the importance of partners in fertility decisions, with a focus on the provision of fertility-related information that is also geared towards partner. We highlight the need to involve partners in fertility discussions, and that their needs should be taken into account in both clinical guidelines and in the development of educational tools, for an optimal decision-making process.
Can disability support services (DS) facilitate access to mental health services (MHS) for people with intellectual disability? This study utilized 10years of data from 6,260 persons in NSW who had received DS and specific MHS to quantify the relationship between DS utilization and MHS utilization in adults with intellectual disability and co-existing mental illness.
Receipt of DS was associated with greater odds of accessing community mental health (CMH) services (36%, 95% CI 29%-43%) but not psychiatric admissions. Age, sex and social disadvantage did not affect the odds of psychiatric admission or CMH use. At postoperative day 7, a blue dye testing was performed. If negative, a VFS was performed looking for a blind fistula. If this exam was negative, oral refeeding was started, but if a blind fistula was observed, cervical compression bandage was performed.
In 186 patients, a VFS was performed for 142 patients with negative blue dye testing. It was negative for 98 patients (69%) and positive for 44 patients (31%) (blind fistula). Patients had a probability of 7.1% to have a secondary pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF) if the VFS was negative, and 15.9% if it was positive. No risk factor for the development of a secondary PCF or a blind fistula emerged from our analysis.

We identified a 5-bp deletion in the rax (retina and anterior neural fold homeobox) gene, which was tightly linked to the recessive eyeless (e) axolotl locus in an F2 cross. This frameshift mutation, in exon 2, truncates RAX protein within the homeodomain (P154fs35X). Quantitative RNA analysis shows that mutant and wild-type rax transcripts are equally abundant in E/e embryos. Translation appears to initiate from dual start codons, via leaky ribosome scanning, a conserved feature among gnathostome RAX proteins. Previous data show rax is expressed in the optic vesicle and diencephalon, deeply conserved among metazoans, and required for eye formation in other species.
