The program funded communities interested in preventing homelessness among youth and young adults with child welfare histories. The funder, grantees, and ETA provider call it Youth At-Risk of Homelessness (YARH). Six federal agencies-the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and Labor, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Institute for Museum and Library Services-supported the second initiative known as Performance Partnership Pilots for Disconnected Youth (P3). We discuss the programs together as they share common features including a focus on building evidence, a focus on disconnected youth, use of liaisons to work with grantees who are developing interventions and planning or conducting evaluations at the same time, and having the same liaisons provide ETA to both the grantee/service providing group and the local evaluator. The article discusses (1) the grant programs, (2) details about ETA including its funding and provision, (3) details about the success and utilization of ETA, (4) benefits of ETA, and (5) balancing program or initiative requirements and evaluation needs and concludes with (6) thoughts on how to make ETA successful.OBJECTIVE To increase access to high-quality and multiregional databases in global epidemiology of cleft surgeries through partnership with an NGO. DESIGN The study retrospectively analyzes 34 801 primary palate surgeries in 70+ countries from the 2016 electronic health records of an non-governmental organization (NGO). The study also utilizes the Kids' Inpatient Database to compare the epidemiology of primary cleft palate surgeries in the United States. PARTICIPANTS Patient records of those undergoing primary cleft palate surgeries only. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Region, age, sex, type of cleft, laterality of cleft. RESULTS Key findings show that average age of those receiving primary cleft palate surgery in the low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) was 1.95 years. The distribution of males and females receiving surgery corresponds to the US national data. More hard cleft palates were on the left side (66.18%) than the right side (33.82%), independent of gender and region. CONCLUSIONS Databases from an established NGO can be used to enhance our understanding of the disease characteristics in these regions. By increasing the information available regarding cleft surgeries in the LMIC, we hope to increase awareness of the similarities and differences in surgeries across various regions, as part of an effort to inform the goals set by Global Surgery 2030 initiative by the Lancet Commission.INTRODUCTION A heart-healthy diet might reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Genetic variants that affect taste are associated with food choices. This study aims to investigate the associations of the TAS2R38 haplotype with consumption of sodium, sugar, saturated fats, and vegetables. HYPOTHESIS We hypothesized that, compared to people who are alanine-valine-isoleucine (AVI) homozygous for the TAS2R38 gene, those who are heterozygous or homozygous for the proline-alanine-valine (PAV) haplotype would have (a) a higher intake of sodium, sugar, and saturated fat, and (b) a lower vegetable intake. METHODS DNA from participants at risk for CVD was genotyped, and participants were assigned to groups by haplotype. Intake for sodium, sugar, saturated fat, and vegetables was assessed using the Viocare Food Frequency Questionnaire. Intake was categorized as higher versus lower consumption, divided at the median, and examined by logistic regressions. All models controlled for age, sex, smoking status, body mass index, education level, and financial status. RESULTS The 175 participants had a mean age of 52 ± 13 years, 72.6% were female, 100% were Caucasian, 89.1% were overweight or obese, and 82.9% were nonsmokers. Participants with one or two PAVs were grouped together, as PAV is the dominant gene, and comprised a majority of the sample (80.6%). Haplotype did not predict intake of sodium, sugar, or saturated fats. Compared to AVI homozygotes, participants with PAV homozygous or heterozygous haplotype had lower odds of being in the higher vegetable intake group (95% CI [0.17, 0.92], p = .032). CONCLUSIONS PAV haplotype predicted lower consumption of vegetables. These are gaining popularity in research institutes, and specifically in engineering, computer science, business, and healthcare settings. Wikipedia defines hack-a-thon as the blending of the words "hack," referring to exploratory programming, and "marathon," referring to a timed event. This article describes a hack-a-thon approach for active learning in the classroom setting.In this study we investigated the regulatory role of cell-migration-inducing and hyaluronan-binding protein (CEMIP) in the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). The mRNA and protein levels of CEMIP were upregulated in the plasma samples from patients with atherosclerosis, and in VSMCs stimulated with platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB), compared with plasma from healthy subjects and untreated VSMCs. Silencing CEMIP suppressed PDGF-BB-induced cell migration and proliferation in VSMCs, as determined using a Cell Counting Kit-8 assays, 5-ethynyl-2'-deocyuridine (EDU) assays, flow cytometry, wound healing assays, and Transwell assays. Overexpression of CEMIP promoted the proliferation and migration of VSMCs via activation of the Wnt-β-catenin signaling pathway and the upregulation of its target genes, including matrix metalloproteinase-2, matrix metalloproteinase-7, cyclin D1, and c-myc, whereas CEMIP deficiency showed the opposite effects. The knockdown of CEMIP in ApoE-/- mice by intravenous injection of lentiviral vector expressing si-CEMIP protected against high-fat-diet-induced atherosclerosis, as shown by the reduced aortic lesion areas, aortic sinus lesion areas, and the concentration of blood lipids compared with mice normally expressing CEMIP.
